A Texas state senator is proposing mandatory three-hour adoption counseling sessions for women seeking abortion. Reality Check asserts this “could not be anything other than, at best, deeply biased, or at worst, profoundly coercive.” We agree. Putting that hurdle between women and accessing their legal choice shows blatant disregard for federal law, and complete ignorance of the complexities of adoption. It stems from the misguided assumption that adoption should be pushed as an alternative to abortion. Adoption and abortion are two completely different, and valid, pregnancy options. The larger question is -- what role should adoption hold in the conversation about reproductive rights?

“Whether one is pro-life, pro-choice or without an opinion, After Tiller provides personal insight into a heart-wrenching, complex reality.” This documentary film looks into the experiences of the women who seek later abortions and the doctors who provide this controversial care. Pregnancy options talkline Backline will join the panel discussion after the Portland screening on Oct. 11 at the Living Room Theater.

An Oklahoma Supreme Court ruling dissolved a court order that kept baby Veronica in the Cherokee nation. Late Monday evening she was peacefully returned to her adoptive parents, who say that birthfather Brown will remain an important part of Veronica’s life. We hope this resolution gives them the opportunity to develop a natural relationship between their families.

For the Junos of today, this section of our website details pregnancy options, how counseling helps and most importantly – reinforces that women and their partners have choices. At OA&FS, we support and empower their decision-making in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.

Friday film flashback! Fall rains make for a perfect time to revisit movies we love. The disarming charm of Juno is still fresh five years later. Though not a perfect depiction of the adoption process, this movie nails the “bumps we can’t avoid” with a healthy dose of light and dark humor.
