Recipe! Pear and Ricotta Crisp
A few days ago, I polled my Facebook to find out if anyone else had heard of a strange dessert from my childhood. My mother was raised by her grandparents, who suffered through the Great Depression, and I'm sure one of the products of that kind of headspace...

"Is It Eyes?"
Nate runs up to me tonight as I'm taking notes at the computer. "I'm scared," he says. I scoop him onto my lap. "What are you scared of?" I ask him. "I'm scared of the eyes," he says. He wriggles down from my lap and goes to the door, pointing out the windo...

The United States of Barbarians
How are we not supposed to feel like the world is coming the fuck apart? People are being killed in cold blood by the police, and the police walk free -- and while many people protest, there are also many  who cheer. Our fellow Americans are rationalizing t...

The one where Cara freaks out about unemployment (or, "In Defense of Temp Workers, too")
In 16 days, through no fault of my own, and with more than adequate advance warning, I will lose my job. I've spent the last few months growing increasingly anxious and productive. I adore my job. I'd do it forever, if they'd let me. They could never give...

I love my wrinkles.
I love my wrinkles. These tiny lines I start to see under my eyes, around my mouth. They mean, overall, I've smiled more than I've frowned. I won't cover them with makeup, fill them with collagen, because they are the sum of my experiences. I love my wrinkl...

For "Roger" (or, "Another Bite at the Apple")
I won't use your real name, because as far as I can tell, you're still on the run. I was drinking draft beers one August evening at Campus Pub, chatting with a friend when you touched my shoulder. "I like your tattoos," you said. I spun around to tell you o...

2014: Year-End Wrap-Up, or "The Worst, Best Year of My Life"
New Year's Eve spent a really long time as my favorite holiday. A holiday centered around staying up late, drinking champagne, kissing, and promising to be better next year with no real intention of doing so -- New Year's Eve seemed to be a holiday hand-cra...

On NaNoWriMo (or "Cara writes 878 words about writing 50,000 words)
As most of you probably already know if you know me personally, this November I participated in National Novel Writing Month -- known as NaNoWriMo. The challenge: write a novel of 50,000 or more in 30 days. I'd been curious about the challenge after seeing ...

The Last Cupcake (or, "More Semi-Accidental Weight Loss")
Vanilla deliciousness. This is the last cupcake, left over from our son's half-birthday party,
and it says more about what's changed about me than anything else. It's
proof positive that I've learned to stop eating my feelings, to
understand that food al...

On Co-Sleeping
It's controversial. It's a source of parental stress. It's how we sleep. If your kid sleeps in his own bed, that's awesome. Good for you! It wasn't for us. I couldn't let that little baby cry himself to sleep. I kept thinking, "If I told someone tomorrow 'I...

Introduction
I thought I was a writer for a few decades, but that's passed. Now I watch lots of documentaries, mostly about outer space and earth history. I have an awesome husband, an aloof but fantastic cat, a spastic but adorable dog, and a son who makes waking up every day a delight.
How could it have gone any better?
