[WARNING; (rambling) DISCUSSION OF POLITICS AND GAMING]

Well this is interesting, unexpected, and not unwelcome.

For some time the OSR has been a community I admired for its creativity, one that I held at arms length because of its inclusion of and tolerance for some pretty terrible people doing appalling things.

Just the OSR logo on a product alerted me to the fact that I had to be careful, because the product could contain far-right coded (or as we used to call it back in my day crypto-fascist) stuff. You know the kind of thing that I mean--stuff excused as being 'edgy' or 'trolling' or 'just a joke man, relax' and 'hey, free speech, right?'. Those that spoke out were silenced as being 'anti-fun' or 'prudes' or 'extremist leftists, and there are good people on both sides'.

||Sidebar/ It's true I'm pretty left-wing when it comes to US politics, but centrist when it comes to European politics (which tells you just how far the left in the US has moved right, and how far the right has moved to the far-right). I support sensible gun control (though not banning them), free and fair healthcare for all (though paid for sustainably), compassionate and forward-thinking immigration policy (though not totally open borders), green policies (while still supporting science, progress, technology, and high-end consumer electronics and cheep goods), and balancing the common good with individual freedoms. I stand against hate and for love, and think that we shouldn't punch downwards but rather help each other climb upwards. I think that life isn't a zero-sum game. Apparently these days that's considered far-left. And those who know me personally will tell you I'm far from being a prude, and I won't discuss that here ;) . Those who've supported my work know that I don't shy away from the occasional shock-value shtick when it is needed, but nor do I rely on it either.||

[mini rant incoming in 3,2,1...] Often the OSR logo meant recycling stale ideas, but sometimes it meant revisiting old ideas in new and interesting ways. There is gold in them thar hills. Some (but not all) of the biggest names in the OSR got there by recycling stale-yet-safe ideas with pure edgelord shock-value slathered all over them. Oh how edgy, babies on sticks. Again.

||Sidebar/ That's the thing. A lot of the OSR 'superstar' content is one flavour. I like cherry. When everything tastes of cherry it just gets bland. When everything is shock value, when the movie (to switch metaphors) is all jump scares and gore all the time, it gets dull. People with obvious talent never improved their craft because they are stuck in cherry-flavoured jump-scare babies-on-sticks-lulz territory. Painting with one color.||

Mostly however, even if the product itself didn't contain crypto-fascist dog-whistling (or often overt) ickiness, then I still had to research the author to make sure I wasn't giving money to an ass who is known for such things elsewhere.

As a writer I've collaborated on a couple of OSR projects that went beyond shock value and into interesting territory. You might find my name tucked away here and there in various OSR books on your shelf... and some other books on your self don't feature my name because once I saw the finished product and who else had contributed and what it had become, I asked to have my name taken off (and after the third time that happened I stopped contributing to the OSR).

I like what the DREAM of the OSR is. The anyone-can-make-something-come-and-try philosophy. That philosophy is how I got my start, a company that was willing to hand over a slice of their audience to an untested writer armed with nothing but google docs and MS paint and enthusiasm. While my writing and art and production design have greatly improved through practice, I'm still just somebody putting out content because I love it, and sharing it with others (and always grateful for those that support my work).

I bemoan what the OSR has become. Something that drives people away from gaming. Something divisive rather than inclusive. Something that drowns out creativity rather than fostering it. Recently, this very week, I've seen trans people walk away from gaming and contributing to gaming creatively because of the toxicity of certain communities. Today one of the OSR 'superstars' who uses the OSR logo published a blog post mocking trans people, because it is trans awareness week. And no, I'm not going to put up links or name names--I don't want anybody harassing anybody else, nor do I want to give extra advertising to those who don the mantle of the edgelord to gain free press.

||Sidebar/ And no, no sea-lions please. I don't want to discuss 'free speech'. People are free to say whatever they want, but words and actions have consequences. Free speech doesn't mean speech free from consequences. Nor do I want to discuss how it is 'just a joke' or 'trolling' or 'trying to start a discussion'. When all your jokes punch downwards in a similar direction it is clear to see where somebody stands. Nor do I want to discuss how this RPG superstar who regularly dumps on women, trans people, etc might be a trans woman in denial or in the closet. Shitty behaviour is still shitty behaviour.||

Yet there is hope. There are writers and artists doing it for themselves, collaborating together, exploring new ideas and finding new ways to use old ideas. The dream is alive. The flowers of tomorrow nourished by the soil of yesterday, struggling past the choking weeds of hate and up through the cracks in the concrete of conformity, reaching for the sunlight of success.

That simile kind of got away from me.

I love what the OSR community set out to be. I love what the dream of the OSR is. I love what it could become. I love what some people are doing with it right now. I love the ground-up anybody-can-do-it best-of-the-past-with-a-modern-lens ethos.

Today Stuart Robertson announced that he was asserting certain rights to the OSR logo and would no longer allow it to be used to promote hate speech.

"...you are not permitted to use the OSR logo on your website, books or other publications if you are publishing [...] hate speech directed towards people based on colour, race, religion, ethnic origin or sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or mental or physical disability. You are not permitted to use the OSR logo and publish hate speech or harass other members of our community."

Well, there's a thing i thought I'd never see. Good on you Stuart, and more power to the OSR.
