The bread here is delicious! My husband and I live in St. Louis and this is always a must-stop place when we come visit Chicago. Parking hasn't been an issue when we've visited. The staff is always friendly. And they are pretty quick.

I've heard this rated one of the top five cheap eats in Chicago and I understand why. Everything is cooked fresh and homemade. The restaurant is charming and quaint. I've only ever ordered sandwiches and pastas, but been consistently happy with my selection. It's certainly a comforting place to go for very comforting feel-good food. They always have the day's specials listed on the wall and I have never been disappointed with anything off the daily menu or the regular menu for that matter. I'm also a little reluctant to recommend the sweet french bread loaves that are baked fresh everyday since they are always out of them by the time I get there to pick one up, but they are addictive. Just be sure to have cash in your pocket because they do not take credit cards.

Two words: POLLO DIABLO! I order it with avocado. I've lived by Panes for almost 6 years now, so at this point I think I've tried almost everything on the menu. All of the sandwiches are delicious, but the Pollo Diablo is my favorite. The greek salad is also delicious – the dressing is incredibly flavorful. This spot is a hidden gem. Don't leave without picking up a Monster Cookie...it's worth the calories.

I need to go here more often so I can make this a 5 star. I really liked the bread this place has, homemade and delicious. You can certainly tell the difference between the bread here and at other sandwich shops. The Sloppy Pollo sandwich I got was very good and larger than expected. They really packed the chicken on there.

This place is awesome. Super good sandwiches at a price point that is hard to believe in this city ($7 bucks for a sandwich and a bag of chips). One thing to note though, they don't take credit card, so be sure to bring cash! (or a check, if you're from the 90's). Tends to take 10-15 minutes for them to make your sandwich, so order ahead if you're in a hurry. My process is, go in, check the specials on the chalk board on the wall on the right. Order a special, or one of my fallbacks, the Pollo Diablo or the Oaxacan (pronounced wah-ha-can) Pork sandwich (the Chicken Club and Pompazo are also solid choices). Bread is always fresh (makes sense for a place named after the Spanish word for "bread"). A friend swears by requesting everything on sweet bread, but I like them just the way they are. Dessert: People talk up the monster cookie, which is good, but I love the carrot cake. Always moist (a word which people hate, but is appropriate to use when describing cake, I think), and super balanced with the cream cheese frosting.

Panes is a quaint little cafe that serves sandwiches and soup. The sandwiches are served on homemade bread, which is delicious. They also have a lot of vegetarian homemade soup options which is nice. The monster cookie is great too. It's cash only, though.

Amazing! Adorable little place that makes its own bread (which is delicious) and serves really tasty healthy food options. Also make really great deserts. Only down side is that they are cash-only.

I recently visited panes for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. They are a small local business (which I always prefer to support over the big corporations). I tried their chicken pesto sandwich on tomato bread, even though I had already decided to try the turkey turkey. The fresh baked bread makes a huge difference. I thought it was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had!! They have cute decor and a small outdoor patio. Heads up, they don't take credit cards. Highly recommended.
