An alien with mandible jaws, perhaps friendly, perhaps not...tough to tell with only an inkblot.  #RorschachDoodle I see...

Video of Curiosity's descent! Low res for now -- I think Curiosity has something like 40 MB of uploads per day, so we'll have to wait a while for the high-res version -- but awesome nonetheless. This video captures the landing from the heat shield separation, down to the ground.

This video is taken from Curiosity itself, using the Mars Descent Imager (MARDI).

It seems strange to me that so many think that the best way to help this great country is to help no one but themselves. JFK knew what was up though.

I had a friend, a good guy really, who couldn't fathom why I supported space exploration. He would always argue that there are so many problems right here to fix, why should we focus any of our energies away from the problems at hand.

It's been a long time since I had those discussions and now I think my answer to that question would go a little something like this,

We need to explore the galaxy, and even farther out, to escape from the problems here on earth. We need to explore for the dreams exploration makes possible. More than the actual exploration forces us to go a step beyond mere dreams and DO things. If it hadn't been for the space race back in the sixties I can promise that computers wouldn't be where they are today, maybe the internet wouldn't even exist. So maybe moon rocks weren't the best thing to come out of Apollo 11 after all.

And always remember Columbus didn't find what he was looking for either. Space isn't a giant void, we keep finding new amazing things out there and if we don't start building solutions for exploring space the problems here on earth will never have all the imaginative solutions the exploration itself could create.

Not to mention I really want to visit zero gravity, watch a sun rise from LEO, and check out the Copernicus Crater.
