There has been a lot of #FakeNews this week about Southern Baptists and slavery. The TRUTH is that it was Baptists who treated all people as equal in the church, Baptists who preached against slavery in the South, Baptists who condemned the separation of families and Baptists who declared in 1835 that they would throw slaveowners out of their churches. Wealthy Southern slaveholders knew that their way of life could never survive real Baptist preaching, so they sought to influence, infiltrate and corrupt the churches....

One small group of people who weren't concerned about power, control, money or fame, who treated each other as equals and welcomed everyone who sought to live their lives for Jesus really did turn their world upside down...or rightside up...

I was very glad to see the SBC condemn the alt-right white supremacist movement this week. The resolution is true to our roots and reflects the values instilled by Shubal Stearnes, a remarkable man who planted the first Baptist church in North Carolina in the 1750's and started a movement that changed they way we do church forever....

We used to hear lots of threatening "preaching" about Hell. Now no one will talk about it at all. In both cases, there has been a dreadful lack of quality expository TEACHING on the subject. In this post, I am clearing up common misconceptions, challenging incorrect doctrines, answering Burning Questions and explaining what the Bible really says, the way a TEACHER explains it to a class.

I've been putting off posting this for over 2 years. I've tried to make this as easy to understand as possible and to answer some really important questions. For some of you this might be encouraging, some it could make angry, others it could be a wake-up call. I believe that every word in the Bible is exactly the word God intended and that we have to let the text say what it wants to say and teach it accurately, even if that means contradicting certain things we've always been taught...Please feel welcome to join the discussion on the blog...
