As more and more people begin the practice of yoga, it is important to keep in mind both the health benefits and the risks. Yoga has been shown to contribute to improved strength and flexibility, reduced tension and anxiety, and lower stress levels. However, if performed incorrectly, some yoga practices can also cause harm. While most yoga injuries may not be severe, more serious injuries do occur, including sprains, strains, and dislocations. The safest approach to avoiding these injuries is to learn how to practice the poses correctly from the beginning. If these injuries do occur, then there are a variety of chiropractic treatments that can bring the body back into health.

Here are some injuries of upper extremities to watch for:

Wrists: Muscle and joint injuries can be caused when all of the body’s weight is placed on the wrists when the hands are on the mat. Be sure to distribute the body’s weight through both hands, keep the fingers spread wide, and make sure the elbows are stacked directly over the wrists in arm balances.

Elbows: A frequent cause of elbow pain is pointing them out to the sides in poses when the body is being lowered. Keep them tucked in beside the ribs, and make sure the elbow crease is forward.
