Completely true. As your team grows you need better version control, bug tracking, documentation, design documents - you need all of that anyway but the more people you have the more detailed systems are required so you aren't conflicting with each other's work. Someone has to install, manage, update ,troubleshoot those systems

BTW - I think diseconomies of scale also exist in coaching elite athletes and training doctoral students

What I don't see discussed enough is the need to reform higher education to decrease the proportion of adjuncts, decrease administrative bloat and add more tenured positions. As someone who has paid full price for my children to attend university, I feel I'm not getting my money's worth. Students get only a fraction of the faculty interaction  I benefited from 30 years go.
