Johan Sauer, Consumer Goods Consulting Practice Leader, shares his insight on sales & marketing in the  2013 Consumer Goods Technology Review & Outlook Report.

“In our view, one of the greatest challenges facing the consumer goods industry is redefining and transforming the next generation front office to keep pace with fast changing consumer and customer demands.
Social media is transforming consumers’ paths to purchase: how they learn about new items, form their buying decisions and make their purchase decisions. Trends that used to take weeks to develop can now happen in a matter of hours or days. To get in front of this trend, retailers are building new and deeper insights into consumer shopping behavior, demanding store-level assortments and consumer-specific promotions. With these changes comes a new set of demands on manufacturer marketing and sales functions.
However, today’s marketing and sales capabilities are typically a patchwork of solutions, providers, data and tools. Marketing and sales teams are challenged to develop insights and take action at the new pace of commerce. Frequently, the “fix” is a disjointed approach that may include investments to upgrade and improve each function, but too often, it falls short of enabling the degree of change required to keep pace with market changes.
Leading companies are redefining their front-office strategy. They are taking an end-to-end, process-centric approach. They are looking for ways to make smarter decisions faster. They are shifting to a culture of management by exception versus management by examination. They are finding ways to eliminate work where possible and consolidating remaining low-value tasks in regions with low-cost labor. What is your organization doing?”
