IDIOTS OF THE DAY -- Callous Prick Edition

Ryan isn't the worst when it comes to GOP Reps. Plenty of complete lunatics on that roster. But he is one of the most callous, possibly thanks to his love affair with aynrandian tripe. He has literally nothing to offer.

The trouble with Ryan - and most of the whitebread Repubs - is that they are so adolescent (Trump included). Would you really trust a hormonal teenager to make intelligent decisions?

Max says Patriots, Cowboys is a Super Bowl no one wants http://es.pn/2jEVlBG

Max Kellerman likens the Cowboys and Patriots to supervillains since he suspects most NFL fans despise both teams and wouldn't have a "hero" to root for if they faced each other in the Super Bowl.

1. Lefty agenda has nothing to do with it. Competence of individual hosts does.
2. You must be confusing Fox Sports with Fox News.
3. Both are owned by News Corp/Rupert Murdoch.
4. WTF is left wing homosexual agenda?
5. The proper term is transgender woman
6. Given ownership, both can absorb losses.

IDIOTS OF THE DAY -- Port-a-Potty Edition

The Don's Johns contractor could have a good case in court for covering up/defacing his trademark. I'm sure, nowhere in the contract does the company give federal employees the right to deface their trademark for any reason, let alone to protect the fragile ego of the Orange Baboon.
WASHINGTON (AP) — It's the great port-a-potty cover-up for President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration. Workers preparing for the inauguration Jan. 20 have taped ove

IDIOTS OF THE DAY -- FISA Edition

Sounds fishy. Waiting till October was useless. That suggests lack of information. On the other hand, the dossier alone should have been sufficient for a warrant earlier. I've been arguing this for months. Manafort seems to be likely for an indictment. Flynn (both of them), Page, and now Burt and Cohen all should follow. Cohen and Bannon both have Russian wives. DJT obviously has a penchant for younger East Europeans. Business dealing with Russian mob and Triads -- then selling all of them to Putin. Bribery everywhere. Corruption is always pervasive in Republican administrations, but this one waa ripe months before the election even, and at unprecedented levels. There will be blood. Skeletons will shake out of the closets. It will not end well.

IDIOTS OF THE DAY -- Beholden Edition

There's a distinct possibility that Comey's letter wasn't the only act of pro-Trump sabotage at the FBI
Christopher Steele, the former MI6 agent who investigated Donald Trump’s alleged Kremlin links, was so worried by what he was discovering that at the end he was working without pay, The Independent has learned. Mr Steele also decided to pass on information to both British and American intelligence officials after concluding that such material should not just be in the hands of political opponents of Mr Trump, who had hired his services, but was a...

Oh, crap! This is why sushi fish is supposed to be frozen first.
The Japanese broad tapeworm is usually only found in fish from Asia's Pacific coasts, but a study found that wild salmon netted in Alaska were also plagued by the parasite.

IDIOTS OF THE DAY -- Orange You Smart Edition

The dossier is disturbing. It's not 100% accurate, but we shouldn't expect that from raw HumInt. But even if a fraction of the claims is true, dawdling by the FBI has put a Manchurian Candidate in office. At this point, there are two possible ways out. 1. Impeachment. Barring other developments, Republicans will find it convenient to remove the irritant and place one of their own in his place. My guess, fairly random but intuitive, is that we'll have President Pence by next year, so I expect impeachment by October. 2. Palace coup. We haven't had a President die in office since JFK, so this would come as a but of a shock. But quiet poisoning mimicking a heart attack would protect GOP against post-impeachment backlash both from the left and the right. If intelligence services are on board -- to make up for their miss -- you can expect the same timeframe as above. Either way, I don't see the Orange Baboon passing the test of time.

Trump is allied with GOP but is unpredictable. His removal would unleash a torrent of unabated conservative "reform", boosting both the Christian Right and libertarian factions. Both should prove disastrous in short order.

IDIOTS OF THE DAY -- Egalitarian Edition

Right and wrong here. And a few missing points.

1. Students at state schools today are largely from educated, middle-class to upper-middle-class families. We know that the highest correlation of college success is with mother's education level. Majority of these students are also white.
2. That does imply that most of the benefit from free tuition would go to students with fairly privileged backgrounds.
3. This doesn't mean, however, that it's bad to benefit even the smaller number of underprivileged students. For some, this may be the only way to access college.
4. Let's be clear -- we're only talking about tuition, not all expenses. That means that underprivileged students would be left with bills that represent a much higher fraction of their families' incomes. If we also consider that a lot of the costs for the program would come from significantly reducing federal student assistance programs (loans and grants) that already cover most of the expenses for these students, we have a much more serious problem than Slate lets on.
5. Eliminating all or most future debt for most of these students is universally a good thing.
6. If the original assistance is partially maintained, that will make for much easier access to college for lowest SES student. Lower middle class students, however, might end up with an increased immediate burden (but still get the benefit of no future debt).
7. There will be increased pressure on states to slow down tuition inflation. But, if most money is federal, there will be temptation for many to milk the cow.
8. Impact on balance between private and public universities is unclear. The bigger names will become more exclusive upper class playgrounds. With significantly lower out-of-pocket costs, the caliber of state students will increase. If admissions dwindle, the private schools will be forced to increase their tuition even more.
9. Smaller private colleges that are already struggling attracting students will be forced to close. This has more of a historical and cultural impact than pedagogic, but it will still reduce the number of options.
10. Most European universities have either free or low-cost access for residents. Some are tuition-free for foreigners (but other conditions must be met). There's no reason why we cannot do that aside from multilayered greed.
Nobody would ever accuse Bernie Sanders of trying to coddle the rich. But some certainly think his plan to abolish tuition at public colleges would end ...
