I felt very similarly about Upstream Color. It's as though Carruth just needs a partner that can help him out when he steers the wrong direction. Other than that he has great ideas.

Just watched Nosferatu (1922). Has some really great imagery. I think Sunrise (1927) is a work of Murnau's that has more longevity, but if you're looking for some striking German Expressionism, this is right up there with The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920).

The shot in the marsh is fantastic.

What We're Watching  -

I saw Mud on Thursday night. I thought it was exceptional. The beginning was a little slow, and the ending is a little too convenient. However, the myriad characters are fantastic, the acting is impressive, the script is both authentic and engaging, it is beautifully shot, and it weaves in it's many motifs and themes in a really consistent, yet unobtrusive way. There is also a lot of subtle (and hilarious) comedy. There is a scene with Michael Shannon in a trailer that stands out in particular. Maybe it's simply because I'm an Arkansan, but honestly I can't remember being this engaged in a film in a longtime (or even simply enjoying one more).

I guess it could keep your face warm during cold winter days, too, but maybe this is more of a “night piece.” Anyway, Etsy shop Knitrocious designed this lovely handmade Alien Facehugger to keep yer face all toasty and cozy. I like how the eyeholes are perfectly placed. It’s a $150 + shipping here. Previously on Dangerous Minds: Suck on that: ‘Alien’ facehugger bong   Via Nerdcore

Saw Gatsby on Saturday. Bleh.

Probably the best part of the experience was how many people in the theatre were laughing hysterically at the end of this trailer:

Honestly, Gatsby should have been good. I mean, I even tried to like it. It had some decent shots and some nice music. I was listening to the music today and trying to figure out how the movie was so bad. Ultimately it just seemed like it was less than the sum of its parts. Bad acting that was so pervasive it just had to be bad directing. And some really bad writing. Instead of creating a fantastical world, it created a fake one. The scene at the mistresse's apartment was fun, but that was the only one I recall liking.

I can't really comment on Luhrman. I've only seen Moulin Rouge and it's been a while. I thought it was great and really did what Gatsby failed to.

The chief of theory conversation and the Paul Giamatti scenes were also fun.
