“Warsaw airport has a reputation of one of the best performing airports in winter"

"Warsaw Chopin Airport has made preparations to begin its winter operations campaign ensuring continuous aircraft movements throughout the season and during severe precipitation.

Chopin Airport’s Winter Campaign is ready, when necessary, to be implemented using the latest maintenance machinery and technical services in order to continue airport operational efficiency during poor weather conditions. Chopin Airport technical services have already applied a 12-hour roster in readiness for changeable weather conditions.

The airport has plans to use sets consisting of snowplough, tug and brush cleaner to clear runway and taxiway surfaces. Those sets having a working width of 5.5m are able to clean nearly 4 kilometres of a 45-metrewide runway within just twenty minutes.

Warsaw airport has at its disposal six machines designed for surface de-icing. The technical services team will use Poland’s largest Dammann sprinkling machine. The device, with 40-metrewide arms, allows the team to cover the entire working width of the runway surface during one passage, without the necessity to refill the de-icing fluid.

Man tried to kick down the cockpit door on Wizz Air flight

An airplane was forced to make an emergency landing in Malmo Tuesday after a man tried to kick down the cockpit door at 10,000 feet.

The Wizz Air flight from Romania to Norway was forced to land in Sweden after panicked crew raised the alarm with the pilot.

The man also allegedly tried to open two emergency exits. One witness said that the man was shouting and running down the aisle, before trying to kick down the door to the cockpit.

He was finally subdued by two other passengers.

The man was later arrested on suspicion of violating aviation laws by endangering passengers during a flight, according to police in Sweden.

Airlines and aircraft manufacturers keep coming up with wackier ideas for squeezing more people into airplanes.

Remember the saddle-seat? And the hexagon sardine scheme?

The latest zany proposal is outlined in a patent filed in Europe by aircraft manufacturer Airbus to offer passengers a flying version of bunk beds.

Passengers would climb stairs or a ladder to reach the upper level of the two-tiered seating layout and seats that could be reclined to a lie-flat position, which would allow one passenger to stretch out on top of another, with a bit of space between them.

What happens if you open the plane door during a flight?

"Ever felt the overwhelming urge to yank the door open on an aircraft? Here's what would happen.

(…)

Even instances of slow decompression, of which there are an estimated 40 to 50 a year, can be fatal. In 2005 a Boeing 737 operated by Helios Airways crashed, killing all 121 passengers and crew (the deadliest air disaster in Greek history), after a gradual loss of cabin pressure. The lack of oxygen at 30,000 feet left the crew incapacitated, and the plane – on auto-pilot – slowly ran out of fuel, before plunging to the ground.

In such instances, oxygen masks (with enough oxygen to last several minutes) should drop from the ceiling to stave off hypoxia (a lack of oxygen, which leads to sluggish thinking, dimmed visions, unconsiousness and then death). In the cockpit, the flight crew will don their rubber masks and begin a rapid descent to a safe altitude – anything below 10,000ft (mountainous obstacles notwithstanding).

Sudden decompression, which would occur if a plane door was suddenly thrust open, is another matter. Anyone standing near the exit would be ejected into the sky; the cabin temperature would quickly plummet to frostbite-inducing levels, and the plane itself might even begin to break apart. In 1988, an Aloha Airlines flight (also a Boeing 737) with 90 people on board was en route to Honolulu, cruising at an altitude of 24,000 feet, when a small section of the roof ruptured.

The resulting “explosive” decompression tore off a larger section of the roof, and a 57-year-old flight attendant called Clarabelle Lansing was swept from her seat and out of the hole in the aircraft. Luckily, all other passengers were belted up, and the pilot managed to land 13 minutes later, avoiding further loss of life. Dozens of other examples of explosive decompression have been recorded, and it often doesn’t end well.

(…)

But there has been at least one incident when a passenger did manage to open the door of an aircraft while it was in the sky. In 1971 “Dan Cooper” hijacked a Boeing 727, extorted a $200,000 ransom, and then leapt from the rear exit with a parachute, never to be seen again. However, he had the pilot depressurise the plane in order to do so, while a year later “Cooper vanes” were installed to completely disable aircraft doors while the landing gear is up. (…)"
