Here is a new chronic low back pain study. They looked at the outcomes regarding the addition of a psychological or social treatment to normal approaches. It appears the addition is useful! If they only added chiropractic as well!

One question we get frequently is: Does my insurance cover chiropractic? The short answer is well, usually. Locally, all of the following employers cover at least 26 visits a year: MU, MBS, Machens, Shelter, 3M, CPS, City of Columbia, VA, State Farm, VU, and the State of Missouri. The big name missing? Yep. Boone Hospital does not. Call to schedule an appointment today 573.442.2060

Did you ever wonder what type of problems we see most often here in our Chiropractic office in Columbia. If you guessed low back pain, then you were right. Here is a primer on the most common cause for that low back pain.
The joints that are often affected are called facet joints, sometimes posterior joints, or rarely zygapophyseal. These small moveable joints can cause acute low back pain and are well treated in the office with ice and chiropractic adjustments. Each of the vertebrae of the spine has four facet joints, two above and two below. Best of all, thought the pain is great, we can treat with conservative chiropractic care in the office. Do you have low back pain right now? Try twisting your low back while leaning backwards; does that make the pain more intense? If so, chances are that you have a facet joint sprain.

Have you been having achy joints and stiffness in the mornings for sometime now? It could be Arthur, Arthur-itis that is.

Arthritis is two the combination of two words. Literally meaning "joint inflammation". As you could guess there are many different types and causes of "joint inflammation".  The most common type by a long shot is Osteoarthritis (OA), which is literally " bone-joint inflammation" This is the kind of arthritis that is more likely to affect you if you are  overweight, sedentary, female, and getting older. You will mostly find osteoarthritis in the joints of your knees, hips, low back and neck. If you wake up each morning with a  stiff achy back or neck, you probably have some arthritis in the affected joints, if it has lasted for many months.

So what do you do about it? Here are a few options:

Exercise:
Stretching, strength training, and aerobics are all great ways to deal with pain. Try to get 30 minutes three times a week.

Nutritional Support:
Fish oil is a sure bet. Look for a higher DHA to EPA fish oil and try to get around 2000 mg a day.
Lower your meat intake, if you only consume meat at one meal a day your body will not make as many pro-inflammatory molecules.
Glucosamine, MSM, and Chondroitin: I'm not convinced that these are worthwhile, the research doesn't seem to support their use at this time. However, if you take them already and you feel like they help you, go for it.

Chiropractic:
In addition to nutrition and exercise, chiropractic can increase joint function, flexibility, and relieve joint pain! Chiropractic can restore normal joint function, which often times keeps OA at bay!
