New Whitfield slipped past us in a blur. Magnolias and Live Oaks lined the street on either side of us; already, in the very beginning of spring, the air felt heavy and thick. It smelled heavenly, though. The scent of new life blew in through the windows, tangling with the wind in my hair.

Hard to believe I was on such a gruesome errand.

Daughter of Glass, Chapter Eleven: The Gathering

The sun hit my pillow at an angle that sent it straight into my eyes. I blinked in protest, but decided not to fight waking up. I’d slept terribly the night before, and the best I could hope for was some coffee to get me going. I threw back the cotton sheets with more force than was absolutely needed, and dragged on my robe.

The breakfast room was off the back of the kitchen. I padded on bare feet right to the door, thinking sleepily of caffeine and maybe a little orange juice. I released a yawn at the same time I heard voices speaking, low and furtive. There were people in the breakfast room, and from the staccato, angry way they spoke to each other, I could tell they were having some kind of argument.

Daughter of Glass, Chapter Nine: Mr. Bain's Proposal

As blood pooled slowly on the white marble dining room floor, I kept my head down and focused on each drop. They exploded on impact and sent ripples outward through the scarlet puddle. It struck me as a good metaphor for my life: I was that drop of blood, sending shock waves through everyone, and everything, around me.

A normal person would be terrified. Here I stood, surrounded by people I didn’t trust, watching a pool of blood only I could see. A pool of blood that would disappear as soon as my guardian did. Fear, the guardian in question, smiled thinly at me and tucked his necklace of razor blades back around his neck. I had never asked why he did it, the cutting; it only happened in situations that would make any normal person run.

Daughter of Glass, Chapter Seven: Razor's Edge

Fear wore a dull gray trench coat that looked like it was perpetually in need of a wash. Frayed in places, the coat hung off his cadaverously thin frame like a dusty sheet over a piece of forgotten furniture. Pale skin, tinged a sickly yellow, seemed to bleed through the thin clothes he wore underneath his coat. He didn’t touch me when he slid up beside me, but then, he didn’t have to. Fear was that rare guardian who seemed to carry his own weather with him wherever he went. Just by standing next to me, it felt as if the temperature had dropped several degrees, and in spite of myself, I shivered.

I stood in the upscale gallery, listening while people discussed my almost-death.

The subject matter was brilliantly rendered in Noah’s newest painting. In it, I lay on the floor, white-faced and still, while Noah hovered over me and various impossible beings stood around in the background. A figure who was meant to be Bain flashed fangs and red eyes; Noah had obscured the details so that only a few could recognize the real him. Bain was not a subject either of us wanted to bring up in public. Even after his defeat, he was still too powerful. In retrospect, it seemed he had given up a little too easily, and we both worried we hadn’t seen the last of him. I tried to stifle the fear that we hadn’t seen the last of Bain, and his attack that night was just the beginning. His hold on my father was still powerful; Bain was an extremely successful businessman, and my father, as mayor, couldn’t challenge him too directly.

Daughter of Glass, Chapter Twelve: Maternal Instinct

At first, I thought I was experiencing some kind of trick; it wouldn’t be the first time some guardian or another had decided to mess with me. Dez, in particular, liked to play jokes and pranks. As the world I knew by the pond melted away from me, I went from being surrounded by guardians to seeing all of them spread around a very familiar room- they hadn’t aged a day. They looked exactly the same as when I had left them, even though this was supposedly years earlier, and I was supposed to be a child. I felt a weird twist to see them all scattered around my living room; I recognized it as the same room even though it had been radically redecorated after…

…After the event I was supposedly here to witness. My mother’s death, which I had gone my whole life thinking was suicide. But apparently it hadn’t been, and my memories had been altered to prevent me from remembering what really happened that night.

Daughter of Glass, Chapter Ten: Sadness, Cut From Glass

If a girl could be cut from glass and spun into life, she would look like my most fragile of guardians. Sadness stood behind Cassandra’s chair in the busy bookstore coffee shop, her translucent hair almost blinding as it refracted back the bright halogen lights overhead. Everything about her was colorless or clear, but she always took on the hue of whatever surrounded us. As she settled into the chair I had fully expected the now-absent Fear to occupy, she took on the subtle blue glow of the tablecloth and bookstore walls. Her skin and hair, however, continued to shine under the lights. A pale, fragile girl who smiled beautifully but rarely, she was the guardian who reminded me most of myself.

Perhaps that’s why I found her presence the most painful. I wondered what kind of light Noah would see if he tried to paint her. Would it glow softly, reassuringly, or would it cut like a beacon? Her presence told me so much about how much I already missed him.

Daughter of Glass, Chapter Eight: Day Fades Into Night

Just at that moment, I noticed the woman with long blond hair named Cassandra step out of her New Age store. She looked around as if trying to find someone, then plunked a bucket on the ground at her feet. She held a rag in her other hand as she scanned the crowd, a small frown on her otherwise pretty face. I felt a dull echo of that familiar knifing feeling that had been so strong around Noah today, but it was quickly stifled. “I can stay on top of it, when he’s not around,” Fear said, almost conversationally.

Emotions Can Be Deadly
Introduction

Sasha Alexander has a powerful ability.

Either that, or she’s dangerously mad. She isn’t always sure which.

Her father shrouds her in isolation, convinced he’s protecting her from the same madness that took her mother. But the seven impossible guardians that only she can see insist she’s gifted. Her companions since her mother’s suicide a decade ago, they protect her from hurt, pain and fear.

They also keep her from feeling love.

Sasha doesn’t know how to react when Noah explodes through her defenses. This strange young man with the scarred hands suddenly makes her feel again. And she wants more. More of Noah, of his wakening touch. But the guardians don’t want to lose their decade-long hold, while her father despises Noah on sight.

Sasha risks exposing Noah to a world that would cheerfully see him dead.

But unless she can learn to control her own emotions, the biggest danger to them all may be Sasha herself.
