Summer months aren't when you typically see quirky, big-budget original movie properties releasing on major holiday weekends. This year's original projects serving as real summer tentpole releases are pretty much limited to San Andreas, Inside Out, Ant-Man, and Tomorrowland. Inside Out is an animated Pixar film, and Ant-Man is a superhero [...]

Just got back from an IMAX viewing and honestly I found this to be a very enjoyable movie.   Mark I can't match your eloquence but--I thought the larger messaging in the third act took this movie from superb entertainment to something more provocative.  It made me think!  I found the third act emotional revelation to be very touching.  And, the final scene quite inspiring.  Having said all that--I think for me the thing is, a week later I am still talking about Fury Road.  I doubt that i will be doing the same for Tomorrowland.  And that, for me, is the hallmark of a movie that has had a true impact on me.  But, I have nothing negative to say about Tomorrowland.  A noble and lovely effort!

My review of Kristen Wiig's new bittersweet comedy WELCOME TO ME, read it and then go see the film!

http://www.forbes.com/sites/markhughes/2015/05/08/review-welcome-to-me-shows-humor-heartbreak-in-mental-health-struggle/
Films about mental health are already dealing with a touchy subject that requires a deft hand and sensitivity. When the film is a comedy, the difficulties are compounded and the need for sensitivity is even greater. The comedy-drama Welcome To Me manages to walk that fine line, driven by a [...]

Read my review of THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN LIVES, Jon Schnepp's new documentary about one of the most famous superhero movies that never got made!

http://www.forbes.com/sites/markhughes/2015/05/02/review-the-death-of-superman-lives-proves-nicolas-cage-could-fly/
VideoThis weekend, a superhero film hits theaters that is a must-see for fans. It's full of great characters, has many big surprises and twists, includes amazing sets and costumes, and is wildly entertaining. No, not the latest Avengers movie -- although, as my review of that film makes clear, you [...]

Read my review with EX MACHINA's writer-director! It's a fascinating discussion...

http://www.forbes.com/sites/markhughes/2015/04/25/ex-machina-director-talks-gender-nazis-and-collaborative-filmmaking/
One of the year's best films, the sci-fi thriller Ex Machina, expands into wide release Friday, after a limited run in less than 40 domestic theaters during which it took impressive per-screen hauls and racked up $8 million worldwide heading into the weekend. Early Friday box office figures show the [...]

VideoIt is not often that a film comes along which not only subverts genre expectations, but in fact uses that subversion of expectations to create a disconnect between how we traditionally perceive the themes and moral imperatives inherent in the genre and what we are experiencing in the film itself. To be honest I wasn't expecting much from this movie, but your review shows how important it is not to judge a movie before giving it an honest chance to exceed your initial expectations.  Your unique perspective of having dealt with the effects of terminal illness in your own life gives your review even more meaning.  (If more people were willing to give of themselves as you have, imagine where we would be...)  Excellent review as always, Mark!  You are clearly not just another pretty face.  ;)

Great article. I think DC stories have more of showing how heroes deal with human struggle and emotion . We see a lot of trauma and cruelty in heroes past. Also, im guessing that it wasnt batman saying "Do you bleed." The villain in the movie will be bigger than Lex or teamed with Lex. And the fight scene at the end of this trailer is almost happening halfway through the film.

We are apparently in quite a sentimental age. Nostalgia for old TV shows and old film franchises has never been stronger -- particularly among younger viewers who didn't even grow up with the stuff, who yet seem determined to reach backward into older generations' pasts to find entertainment about which [...]

Just got back from seeing this movie and in a word...WOW!  Mark this movie was just unbelievable!!  Thrilling, thought provoking, hauntingly beautiful, sad, hopeful....this movie has it all, including some of the best 3D I've seen in some time.  I can only hope it doesn't languish at the box office.  This deserves to be seen and experienced!!!!
