Kit Carson, one of the most famous figures of the American West, was a messenger during the Mexican-American War (1846 to 1848). The flintlock pistol issued to him and the message pouch he carried—as
well as George Varian’s painting entitled “Kit Carson”—are on view in “Courage and Crossroads: A Visual Journey through the Early American West” (on loan from the Tim Peterson Family Collection).

We’re just steps away from the Main Street galleries so take a peek at our museum while you’re in the neighborhood. We’re open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays. There's free parking in our underground garage. #ArtWalk

"Iron Sharpens Iron" is one of more than 30 bronze sculptures by John Coleman on view through September 30, 2015 at Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West. The bow and arrow represent food and protection for the whole tribe. As this Plains Indian father mentors his son on how to correctly fit the arrow to the bow, he also ensures the survival and prosperity of his people. #sculpture

The Weeping Wall located in the central courtyard has a dual function. It channels rainwater to our trees and plants on stormy days. It also provides a space and focal point for reflecting on the sometimes tragic stories of the American West told inside the museum.

We're celebrating #MuseumDay Saturday, May 16 with cowboy music and storytelling by Gary "Arizona" Johnson. Since it's also U.S. Armed Forces Day, veterans and active members of the military will be admitted for free. #Arizona #AZ #West
