Is the Brain’s Awareness of the World All or Nothing?

http://flip.it/qaxfd
We often think of consciousness as binary: you’re either fully aware of something, or you’re not. Yet according to a team of cognitive neuroscientists at the University of California, Santa... read more

It is not my nature to blindly share every bit of datum I find interesting, but this one hit so close to home, it helped me realize I am not the unique snowflake I once thought I was.

An incredible device concept...

We have news -- we’re excited to be joining Google[x], Google’s moonshot factory. We will continue to sell our Liftware system, and Google will enable us to reach even more people living with Parkinson’s or essential tremor who could benefit from using tremor-canceling devices every day.

This is is insanely creative, well executed, and might make you a bit dizzy-- but still worth watching!

How do you even begin to think up something like this?

The tech is impressive. The defensive counter (a little jiggle on the machine prior to swiping) is now in my playbook.

So, what can you buy with $11B? How about the entire NBA? Or American Airlines? Keeping in mind, this is their QUARTERLY profit .. meaning, they earned enough in 3 months to pay their operating expenses AND still buy the NBA.

A wonderfully scathing indictment of FIFA but wildly entertaining.

Warning: in classic John Oliver style, the language gets a bit coarse.

"How would we stream the thing more effectively? If you're watching a video and focusing on one part of it, maybe that part can be sent at a higher resolution."

-- Venkat Panchapakesan, vice president and top engineer at YouTube

This is a quote from an interview with cNet. Fascinating approach, but one I am a bit concerned over as someone who favors Ridley Scott and Terry Gilliam over Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich.

This could have some serious implications ... of the positive sort. Microsoft was the money behind both Halo and Age of Empires (yes, they were other publishers, but still solid franchises). Now, if EA were the potential suitor there would be definite cause for concern.

The customers stare pretentiously out on those walking by. I pass this place twice dismissing the coffee snobs looking down upon me. Then my craving calls forth and I go in to keep from throwing away any more of my money to the green behemoth. My misgivings have a name - embarrassed shame. The coffee is better than I could have imagined, the baristas are kinder than 80yr librarians, the patrons are energetic and friendly, I am humbled. Then, to ensure my continued return, the staff walked around handing out free slices of warm chocolate cake. All of this AND a mission worth supporting. Pay heed green merfolk - this is how a company should behave.
