Social Capital "The unscrupulous succeed best in accumulating wealth". That is a singly cynical view of success and I'm sure a very convenient trope for duping the gullible.

Success comes from hard work. Shortcuts only work when a handful of companies work with a handful of government officials to remove or block competitors. The idea that additional government oversight will solve the problem has, for decades, proven unsuccessful, despite the increasing reliance on the model. It's the very model that encourages government-corporate collusion.

No one is suggesting that government disappear. But they are meant to be a referee between competitors and to ensure the safety of consumers. That's it. If the umpires collude with the Dodgers, the Cubs cannot win against them. The Dodgers do not need to do their best to win. The Cubs lose no matter how good they might be.

The other alternative I suspect you might prefer is the Umpires becoming a team. The only team. See how well that works. Zero competition means zero innovation, zero answering to consumers. It's an entirely flawed approach doomed to failure in the longer term every time it has been, or will be tried.

Knee jerk liberals versus Harvey Weinstein.
Whenever somebody asks me to describe modern liberalism (as opposed to classical liberalism, which is entirely different) in one word, I always ask if I can use a hyphen.  That's because my word is knee-jerk.  Or knee jerk in two words if you prefer.  Liber...

Friday Musical Interlude (late) - Genesis remix
Just some dancing to a remix of Genesis' hit I Can't Dance.  Due to some technical issues (or sleep), I was unable to post this on time (by Friday end of day).  So I've retro-fitted it to yesterday.

Hillary Clinton is appalled (once again).
Remember the good old days when Hillary Clinton was appalled at Donald Trump instead of her donor Harvey Weinstein? Or for his views on immigration? Now that her donor and dare I say friend, Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has been caught not discussing wo...
