The presenter, Karen McAvoy, is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and a School Psychologist in Colorado. Karen developed the multi-disciplinary team approach to community-based concussion management known as REAP (Reduce/Educate/Accommodate and Pace).

The Family Advocacy Counseling and Training Services Program (FACTS)
If you or a member of your family sustained a brain injury prior to the age of 22 and you live in New York State, a FACTS Coordinator can help you!
Funded by the Office for People with Development Disabilities (OPWDD), the FACTS Program is a state-wide support program for families and individuals who sustained a brain injury prior to age 22. FACTS Coordinators are employees of the Brain Injury Association of NYS and are located in each region of the State.
Listed below are some of the ways coordinators can assist and support your family:
Helping you to understand and navigate the current system of services available in NYS
Linking you with rehabilitation services in your community and throughout the state
Helping you access NYS Medicaid Waiver Programs if qualified
Training members of your family, service providers, and educators to understand the impact of brain injury and brain injury prevention
Connecting you to community support groups about living with a brain injury or caring for an individual with a brain injury
Offering you support with your school system’s special education process
If you are interested in receiving free FACTS services, please contact the FACTS Coordinator in your county by using the search feature to the right on this page.

“Return to Learn: Supporting Students Returning to the Classroom Post-Concussion”
The presenter, Dr. Brian Rieger, discussed the challenges faced by students returning to the classroom after mild traumatic brain injury, especially in cases of complicated or prolonged recovery.  He also provided attendees with various academic accommodations that can be implemented to assist these students.

Introduction

The mission of the Brain Injury Association of New York State is to promote awareness, understanding and prevention of brain injury through education, advocacy, and community support services that lead toward reduced incidence and improved outcomes for children and adults with brain injuries and their families.

The Brain Injury Association of New York State (BIANYS) is a statewide non-profit membership organization that advocates on behalf of individuals with brain injuries and their families. Established in 1982, BIANYS provides education, advocacy, and community support services that lead to improved outcomes for children and adults with brain injuries and their families. The Association also offers a toll free family help line, chapters and support groups throughout the state, prevention programs, mentoring programs, a video library, and publications library. BIANYS plays a central role in the development of public policy on the federal, state and local level.
