Now that I'm on this frequency-response thing, I found an app that will plot the response of my audio devices. Checked out the SansAmp bass driver DI, got the plot below. An even more extreme dip in the mids, which explains why I haven't been all that satisfied with the BDDI sound over the years. Then once I figured out what to look for, found a discussion on TalkBass discussing the same thing <http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f36/semi-scientific-sansamp-bddi-analysis-394187/>. It's easier to get answers once you know what questions to ask…

New gear is in (which got me a visit from the Foster City police yesterday; more on FB). Discovered that the SWR Studio 220 amp has a whacking huge dip in it's frequency response, right in the midrange intelligibility area, and a pronounced bump in the high end. That's why nobody could hear what note I was playing, and I got so much fingering and fretting noise. There's a mod that will flatten it out; am checking with SF Guitarworks to see what it would cost.

After several months of shopping, have the next gear increment worked out and ordered- EA Wizzy12 MLine http://www.eaamps.com/products-detail.asp?REC_ID=6 and a 550W EA Doubler amp http://www.eaamps.com/products-detail.asp?REC_ID=2 .

This should provide the flexibility I want, ranging from a one-bag amp/cabinet combination, at about 20lbs, up to a huge-sounding combo with a Wizzy10 and MLINE stack. Plus I can use the SWR 220 with either cab and get old-school tube preamp sound. Should be cool.
