The Petroleum Research & Studies Center at KISR is hosting the 13th Kuwait / Japan Symposium on Advancement in Petroleum Refining Processes. In addition to PRSC the other organizing institutions include the Japan Petroleum Institute, the Kuwait National Petroleum Company and the Japan Cooperation Center. The Symposium is a reflection of the special relationship between Kuwait and Japan in general and the long-standing scientific cooperation on petroleum related issues. The Symposium’s theme focuses on refining challenges especially those associated with heavy crude and residue cracking. Dr. Naji Al-Mutairi, Director General of KISR, provided the opening address.

It is expected that new areas for scientific cooperation will be identified as a result of this Symposium and the program papers represent important advances in this area of global importance. KISR’s relationship with The Japan Petroleum Institute and the Japan Cooperation Center is a model for open innovation whereby KISR researchers contribute to international scientific discovery.

Environmental Hour, February 27

The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research and the Environmental Public Authority are working with various governmental and non-governmental organizations in Kuwait to promote this year’s environmental hour on February 27. The event is being held to promote awareness in Kuwait, especially amongst children, about the negative effect global warming is having on our environment. Global warming refers to the gradual rise of the earth’s temperature due to the increase of the concentration of atmospheric greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, that are released into the environment as a result of industrial pollution.

A brief history of the event

In 2007, resident’s from Sydney, Australia launched the event by turning off the lights in their houses, landmark buildings and restaurants for one hour. In 2008 the event grew significantly and 400 cities all over the world sponsored their own environmental hour. From 2009 -2011, the State of Kuwait participated in the event by turning off the lights in more than 26 shopping malls and tourist attractions in coordination with KISR, Kuwait University, and the Kuwaiti Global Warming Team.

Event activities

The organizing committee invites all citizens and residents to participate in the event on Monday 27/2/2012 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm with several Kuwaiti governmental and non governmental organizations by:
- Turning off all unnecessary lights and electrical appliances for one hour.
- Joining in an environmentally-friendly parade on 27/2/2012 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm that will march from the Kuwaiti Society of Scouts to the Kuwait Towers. The event will be organized by the Touristic Enterprises Company and Ministry of Education. The event will also feature a show that will deliver an important message about the importance of protecting the environment.

Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research - معهد الكويت للأبحاث العلمية
Introduction
Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) was established in 1967 by the Arabian Oil Company Limited (Japan) in fulfillment of its obligations under the oil concession agreement with the Government of the State of Kuwait. The Institute was established to carry out applied scientific research in three fields: petroleum, desert agriculture and marine biology. KISR was organized by an Amiri Decree issued in 1973, under which it be came directly responsible, via its board of Trustees, to the Council of Ministers. The main objectives of the institute, as specified in the Amiri Decree, were to carry out applied scientific research, especially related to industry, energy, agriculture, and the national economy, to contribute to the economic and social development of the state and to advise the Government on the country's scientific research policy. An Amiri Decree in 1981 (law No. 28) formally established KISR as an independent public institution. The law specified that the Institute would be governed by the Board of Trustees chaired by a minister chosen by the Council of Ministers. The revised objectives of the Institute remain to carry out applied scientific research that helps the advancement of national industry and to undertake studies relating to the preservation of the environment, resources of natural wealth and their discovery, sources of water and energy, methods of agricultural exploitation and promotion of water wealth. The law entrusted the Institute with undertaking research and scientific and technological consultations for both governmental and private institutions in Kuwait, The Gulf region and the Arab World.
