Dinner party
By David Haskell Cohen

The wooden clothes tree with many branching hands
Was full of hats and coats and conversation
Through oven doors, from inside cooking pans
Food for a Friday night of celebration

A dinner fit for kings and queens —
All our grandchildren, two to slick sixteens
And as we sat and lingered over dining
And talked and laughed, the children’s faces shining
A wonder lay behind those laughing eyes
Memories cooking like crusty golden pies

Purple blossoms
By David Haskell Cohen

I saw a line of purple blossoms lying
Along a city roadside drain
And there were golden petals sighing
Shaken down by wind and rain —
Surely hints which heaven ever flings
Upon our labored, dowdy, man-made things.

Heaven’s not just in roses, grapes and trees
But in human and non-human faces
The dimly wondering look of chimpanzees
And all immense and open places —
I have seen souls walking whom I recognize
And sadly have to lower my longing eyes.

Heaven is all around; they call it Nature
To bring it down to a man-manageable stature

Those who dream
By David Haskell Cohen (First of five verses)

Those who dream and those who doubt
Search for Truth and find Love out
Wander in the highest hills
Struggle in the darkest mills
They will see at last the proof
Growing on Heaven’s fallen roof.
