2017 Hyundai Ioniq triplets electrify New York

If you're an American and want an affordably priced hybrid, plug-in, or full EV from a mainstream brand, get ready to meet the Hyundai Ioniq. The long-awaited rival to the Chevrolet Volt, Ford Focus Electric, Nissan Leaf, and Toyota Prius family heads to the 2016 New York Auto Show.

We already know quite a lot about all three flavors of the Ioniq from its international debut in Geneva. You can check out that report here. But there are some changes for the US market car, and the biggest is the US Ioniq's electric range. Our original report indicated that the Ioniq Electric would cover 155 miles per charge, although we weren't sure which range rating standard that was based on. According to Hyundai, the US model won't be quite so impressive, scoring an estimated range of 110 miles. That fits the prediction of Autoblog boss Mike Austin, who suggested the Ioniq Electric would roughly match the 107-mile maximum of the Leaf.

The other change focuses on the range of the Ioniq Plug-in. That figure has fallen from 31 miles of all-electric range to 25. Both of these revised ratings aren't necessarily down to changes in the cars themselves – the Electric still uses a 28-kilowatt-hour battery and the Plug-in has an 8.9-kWh unit, just like their European counterparts – but are simply differences in how range is measured.

2016 Hyundai Sonata and Tucson Earn Top IIHS Safety Scores

Over the years, Hyundai has made a concerted effort to make high-quality vehicles that serve their owners well, and that has always included a focus on safety. This year, that tradition continues as the #2016HyundaiSonata and the #2016HyundaiTucson earned the best possible Best Safety Pick+ score from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (http://www.jenkinshyundaiofocala.com/models/2016-hyundai-tucson/).

The Sonata received the best score of “Good” on all but the small-overlap front crash test, a strong showing for any vehicle. Still, Hyundai has made it clear that it plans to continue to improve the Sonata so that it receives a perfect score across the board in the future.

Meanwhile, the Tucson made big improvements this year, moving up to the best possible “Good” score in the small-overlap front crash test, helping it to achieve a perfect “Good” rating across every single crash safety test.

Both of these models come with a plethora of standard safety features to keep you safe in case of collision. You’ll find antilock brakes, traction and stability control, front side airbags and side curtain airbags. And because of the Sonata’s sedan design, it also gets front passenger knee airbags. On the other hand, the Tucson has standard safety features like disc brakes, active front head restraints, hill-hold assist, and hill descent control.

Further, both of these models have advanced safety technology to keep you alert and connected for better safety. Technology available on both models includes a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, forward collision warning, and rear park assist. You can also get Hyundai’s advanced Blue Link telematics system, which gets you emergency crash notification, roadside assistance, and geo-fencing to track and control teen driving habits.
