This might be interesting for us. A paper about +Scott Draves Fractal Flame Algorithm. Contains great general hints how to improve picture and animation quality when doing art based on math.

I wonder how much from his catalog of variations (page 16+) could be applied in real time on led animations...

If you have enough computing power it´s really worth to render animations with 32 bit precision.
Together with long palettes and a high fps rate the image quality is just amazing.
Even on a damn 16x16 8 bit matrix. The Teensy 3.6 seriously rocks.

I find this simple pattern quite hypnotizing. Here the centers follow again Lissajous curves with detuned frequencies and speeds. Additional colorshift which rotates the palettes. So it´s basically all very simple, but the resulting interference keeps me entertained.

Again about APA102 @ 24 MHz. It was written here often that it depends on the lever shifters, on the wiring, on the APAs but mostly on the led strip itself how many APAs can be driven at 24 MHz without glitching towards the end of the strip.
I made an interesting observation: I have a setup here which mostly works fine @ 24 MHz. BUT: Without any change of the setup sometimes the last part of the led chain flickers. Exactely the same code, same setup, same power supply, same cables... everything 100% untouched.
I checked room humidity, room temperature, led temperature, atmospheric pressure... but I found no coherent context yet which explains the reason for that.
Any ideas which physical reason or black magic could be relevant for the different behaviour of the setup?
