Yes, I liked it very much. Especially the Mandarin. And the bit with the satellite truck guy.

Remember when Tom Cruise movies invariably involved him being taught life lessons by slightly older, more mature women? Ummmm, those days are over, as "Oblivion" demonstrates.

As a life-long fan of all things "Oz," I was curious to see this.

So delighted by this: Rave review for "Time Stands Still," which continues at the Kalamazoo Civic through next weekend!

Is it a satire or straight-faced sci-fi? I honestly cannot tell you!

My review of "Admission," in which Tina Fey attempts to make the leap to leading lady status, with the help of Paul Rudd, Lily Tomlin and Michael Sheen.

Saw this amazing film in August and haven't stopped thinking about it since then. One of my favorites of 2011.

Story
Tagline
"You might as well live" -- Dorothy Parker
Introduction
Moved to and moved through: Pittsburgh, Pa.; Cleveland, Oh.; Dublin, Oh. (back when it was considered rural!); Grand Rapids, Mich.; St. Clair Shores, Mich. (home of Gifts Afloat -- ahoy, matey!); Madison Heights, Mich. (home of Oakland Mall and more chain restaurants than you can shake a Death By Chocolate at).

Worst job I've ever had: Yuck! -- assembling cardboard boxes eight hours a day in a factory where most of my co-workers were strung out on one drug or another.

Second worst job I've ever had: Bank teller in a small town full of crabby senior citizens who yelled at me and accused me of mismanaging their accounts.

CD store where I once worked: Repeat the Beat in Royal Oak, MI; sadly now defunct, so no more 20-percent-off Tuesdays! But even though the pay was not great, I have a huge CD library and I got most of them at rock-bottom prices.

Movie theaters I once managed: AMC Eastland 5 in Harper Woods, MI (now closed); AMC Abbey 8 in Madison Heights, MI (now closed); AMC Maple 3 in West Bloomfield, MI; AMC Wonderland in Livonia, MI (now closed); AMC Laurel Park in Livonia, MI; AMC Old Orchard 3 in Bloomfield Hills, MI (now closed and turned into a Holocaust memorial!); Eastowne 5 in Kalamazoo, MI (now closed); Plaza 2 in Portage, MI (now closed). It's great to think that I worked so hard for so long at businesses that are now only memories. All that precious paperwork I prepared and filed -- gone forever!
Bragging rights
I have been involved in journalism since I was recruited by The Grand Rapids Press while I was in high school. I spent 10 years working in the film industry in movie promotion and theater management. My other careers have included hosting radio shows, working as an arts reporter on TV, serving as assistant stage manager at The Vineyard Playhouse on Martha's Vineyard, being a venue manager for the Chicago International Film Festival, teaching journalism at Western Michigan University for seven years, etc. Kindle Singles has published my mini-memoir, "The Sum of My Parts."
