Why Planned Parenthood matters...or at least why it should:
(At the request of friends, I have reposted this as public so it can be shared.)

Ok, so the medical issue I talked about yesterday. I have been menstruating for almost three weeks now, and passing some pretty bad clots. I'm not in pain or having cramps. Everything is normal except the duration of the period and the clotting. I wasn't worried about it, but I was frustrated, so I shared the info with some of my girlfriends. They proceeded to lovingly excoriate me and made me promise to get looked at. So I said I would.

I called my local Planned Parenthood today, and explained what was going on. I also said I couldn't afford to pay, and they said "Then we can't see you. We suggest going to the emergency room." I was flabbergasted. Then I was pissed off. I called the home office for the Planned Parenthood district (southwest Ohio), which is located in Cincinnati. They apologized and explained to me that all their federal funding through Title X has been eliminated, making it impossible for them to treat anyone on a sliding fee scale or for free anymore. They just don't have the resources anymore.

So I called a Planned Parenthood in Columbus that says on their website "No one will be turned away based on their inability to pay." I talked to a fantastic nurse and she told me that they are the only clinic in that district (central Ohio) that still has Title X funding, making them the ONLY Planned Parenthood in a 150 mile radius that can help low income women. Greatest country in the world, my fucking ass.

I have insurance but it doesn't start until January. And yes I can go to the ER, but I wanted to go somewhere that specializes in women's health. I know the ER staff at my local hospital is competent, but how much time and resources can they give me? Will I even get proper care? And should low income people really have to resort to going to the ER for basic health care?

If you never thought about what Planned Parenthood does or never really cared much whether or not it had funding, let me be a face of the problem for you. I am someone you know who needs reproductive health care and can't get it. I am someone you know who may have something seriously wrong with them, and I'm going to have to take my chances at the emergency room. And all because this happened when I'm in a situation where I have no money and no insurance.

God bless America.
