Thereupon his successor in title the infant male Custis came to live with his grandmother at Mount Vernon until he turned 21 the year George Washington died without a descendant. Through the influence of the widow Custiss, George Washington was considered the wealthiest American of his time by 1760 through 1798. In comparison to the GDP of his era and succeeding eras through today George Washington may be considered among the wealthiest American's of all time, though the vast majority of the property remained in the son and grandson of Martha's first husband.
