Confidence Matters Just as Much as Ability

You better believe in yourself - or at least choose avenues you have confidence in. Or can we increase our confidence in a particular field, or task?

A bulk of research shows that when people are put in situations where they are expected to fail, their performance does plummet. They turn into different people. Their head literally shuts down, and they end up confirming the expectations. When they're expected to win, their performance shoots back up. Same person, difference expectations.

What does confidence buy you? In addition to greater access to working memory resources, does it also support the use of better strategies for solving the problem? What factors increase confidence? Clearly encouragement plays a huge role. Do hormones also have an effect? What's the role of brain lateralization? Perhaps confidence affects hormones and brain lateralization just as much as hormones and brain lateralization influence confidence. What about repeated exposure and experience in a domain? Excellent research by Sian Beilock and others shows that expertise can overcome the detrimental affects of threatening situations.
So many potential avenues of exploration. While we may only be at the tip of the iceberg in our understanding of how biology, environmental factors, self-belief, emotions and cognition all interact to influence performance, this is an iceberg that is pretty darn important and impacts the success of everyone.

Yesterday evening I buried my closest companion, my cat MardiGras. I had him since he and his brother were small enough that I could hold them both in one hand. (Lost his brother 8 years ago.) MardiGras was one of those vocal cats who talked to you a lot, and one that ruled the house. He was definitely in charge -- a large presence. He was well-loved. My home is empty without him, and I am very sad.

ty all so very much. Every day is still a difficult one. I know it just takes time. He was definitely like a family member here. I generally called to him, "Come here, son..." and treated him as well as I would have any person in my household. If you are a "cat person," I know you understand. Thank you again. It is important to us, as humans, to have a circle of caring friends, so I do appreciate your caring comments.

Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to anything in real life."

+Laura Gibbs Thanks! I've on the job for the morning but as soon as I get a chance, I'll take a look at yr classes! I haven't read any of the book. I do like the quote. It's often attributed to bill gates so I was careful to give it full credit. I agree abt traditional measures.

who to follow related to education!

via +Tracy L. Crawford

As Google+ develops, there are more and more posts about Who to follow. You can find lists for bloggers, tech writers, photographers, artists, etc.

This is the start of a list of who to follow related to education! These are individuals that post education related material or who have demonstrated that they have substantial knowledge in the education field from either their personal interests or careers. Many listed here are teachers at a variety of levels. Others are writers.

I don't presume to know everyone on G+ that is an educator or interested in education, so I will edit this list with suggestions from who they suggest as well.

+Jason Becker, research in general. Works at the RI board of education.

#hashtags #education
Jason Becker originally shared:

Hashtags now have native support on Google+. This is great for content discovery using the Search function that was also recently added.

Since most of the content I share is education related, I thought that I would propose using a few common hashtags to make it easier for the education community on Google+ to discover relevant posts and people. Please comment with additional tags and I can edit as we go along.

If you like the idea you can help spread this practice two ways:
1) Use these tags as often as you can remember on your own post to make your contributions easier to find, particularly on Public posts.
2) Re-share this post with your education or education-related circles.

Some suggested tags:
#edteach - teacher topics
#edcurr - curriculum topics
#edtests - assessment topics
#edtech - education technology topics
#edpolicy - education policy topics
#edadmin - education administration topics
#edreform - education reform topics
#edfin - education finance topics
#edstats - education statistics and data topics
#edres - education research findings
#edgov - education governance topics
#edcharter - charter schools topics
#edphil - education philosophy topics
#highered - post-secondary education
#higheredcc - community college
#opened - Open Coureware and other open access initiatives in #highered
#eddebt - student loans topics

Best science book for children; also a finalist for the Silver Birch Award for non-fiction, one of the most prestigious book awards...

May I just interject how backwards we are that this award-winning book could not be published here?

http://techie-buzz.com/science/evolution-book-award-canada.html
A book on evolution meant for children could not be published in the US due to religious apologists. It has, however, won an award in Canada. A personal take on the Creation-Evolution 'debate'.

+Zelah Meyer I hate that it is up for discussion in the UK. I wish I had an answer. It's frightening to think of were we are headed.

+Wat Hughes yw. Yes, it's very frustrating ... and disheartening. I hesitate to guess where we'll be if we have to deal with another 20 years of apologists at the helm. We've slid backwards so far now, it's difficult to see see daylight from where we are.

+Michael Gillman That's true. And Texas is notoriously backwards when it comes to school texts. Hate it that their decisions are so influential. :(

Introduction
In no particular order (and carelessly ignoring structural parallelism): educator, writer, gardener, geek, internet & book junkie, infomaniac, liberal democrat (leaning so far left I almost fell over), unapologetic about Keynesian economics, mother/grandmother.

1 cat (short-haired, domestic, tuxedo cat-cat); 2 dogs (austrian shepherd, jack russell terrier).
