MANY THANKS TO LAURENE,
A wonderful and longstanding patient melted our hearts with a gracious note and a box of chocolates. We savored the chocolates and summoned our Rotadents.

Dental Danger Signs for Diabetes

Dentists not only protect your dental health but also your general health. In conducting a general oral exam they may detect symptoms of  serious and possibly life threatening diseases.

Diabetes

According to Dr. Julie Ann Bama (DMD, MAGD) of the Academy of General Dentistry , diabetes, afflicting more than 25 million Americans, is one of these dire conditions.

Diabetes can alter the dental pocket environment contributing to bacterial growth. Indeed, people with type II diabetes are three times more likely to develop periodontal disease than non diabetics.  Dr. Bama explains that  "because diabetes reduces the body's resistance to infection, the gums are at risk for gingivitis, an inflammation usually caused by the presence of bacteria in plaque, Additionally, those with diabetes can experience high incidences of oral fungal infections and persistent bad breath."

Monitoring the general as well as the dental health of our patients is a cornerstone of the TLC Dental Group practice and our Professional Dental Cleaning or “Recare” is central to this purpose. "Recare" is a comfortable biannual or, if needed, more frequent procedure that lasts approximately one hour and is comprised of diagnostic, preventive, aesthetic, and educational features. “Recare” is like checking the fluids in your car and its importance can scarcely be overstated. Ignoring it might preclude the early detection of serious diseases such as diabetes.

If you have not had a “Recare” within the last six months please phone TLC Dental Group, the home of “Gentle Dentistry,” at 315-637-7684 for an appointment. You will find our “Recare” or professional teeth cleaning to be a gentle and affordable procedure that is essential for achieving and maintaining both your dental and general health.

IN MEMORIaM

At TLC Dental Group we mourn the wanton killing of the beloved African lion Cecil by a Minnesota dentist. We mourn the loss of yet another member of his vanishing species for the  lion holds a special place in the hearts of Central New Yorkers.

The Cowardly Lion was conceived by the creative mind of  L. Frank Baum and is annually celebrated in his birthplace of Chittenango   And for more than a quarter of a century the Cowardly Lion (in classic Hollywood costume) has held a place of honor on the TLC Dental Group staff.  He is duly profiled on the staff page of our website http://www.tlcdentalsyr.com/staff/ along with his friends The Tooth Fairy and The Mighty Molar with whom he greets present and future patients at special events.

The Cowardly Lion inspired our longstanding mantra, "We Cater to Dental Cowards" and is evoked when Dr. Rothenberg invites children to open their mouths "wide like a lion."  He looms fittingly large at our  Zoo Boo events where he once visited Joshua, the lion of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo, that we "adopted" and financially supported.

We therefore have a long and enduring affection for lions and a deep respect for their place in the animal kingdom and in nature as a whole. It is not just lions that are vanishing from our planet but also thousands of species of flora and fauna. We hope that the senseless killing of Cecil to decorate the wall of a dentist will encourage us to protect and preserve these majestic creatures and all endangered species.
