An unintended side effect of moving to efficient lighting.
LED lighting is great. The right bulb gives the same warm incandescent glow you love from a fraction of the energy. But there's a downside: while LEDs make cities look awesome, the most common type of LED lighting dims the ultraviolet trick laundry detergents use to make white clothes look whiter. The future is bright, but it's also kind of dingy.

Nice technical overview of the Heartbleed bug, for the geeks among us.

My website now makes use of several web fonts, thanks to the great collection over at Google Fonts. Until recently, I hadn't heard of this service, but it's pretty nice. You select the fonts you're interested in, Google generates a CSS file for you, and off you go. It's free and they have a pretty good selection of good looking fonts.

The Font-Combinator web tool (http://font-combinator.com/) was also very useful to preview these fonts on a page.

Very interesting.
Bob Ross was a consummate teacher. He guided fans along as he painted "happy trees," "almighty mountains" and "fluffy clouds" over the course of his 11-year television career on his PBS show, “The ...

A very simple explanation on how Heartbleed works, great for helping the layman understand what's going on.

Some super-scary photos from California. All the water is disappearing!

I have a hard time working up much pity for self-inflicted crises.  Natural drought is to be pitied, but building cities in deserts, homes on sand dunes or floodplains, farms in marginal climates, endless suburbs, not so much. It's as if common sense, an awareness of nature and history are considered myths.

My fiancee and I visited here while in the Apex area due to the positive reviews. Happily, all those reviews are spot on! The food was outstanding (everything is made from scratch), and the service couldn't have been better. Our waiter was hilarious, as were several of the other staff members. This is definitely a restaurant that we will return to in the future. Check it out!

Firenze By Night is a fantastic little Italian restaurant in northern San Francisco. Though it was a hike from our hotel, the walk was definitely worth it. Our waiter was very friendly and the food was oh-so-delicious! The romantic ambiance really sealed the deal for us. If you're in the area and want delicious Italian food, this is the place to get it.

My girlfriend and I recently stayed at this hotel for 4 nights, and we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of this hotel. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly, and the hotel's location is in a very convenient part of the city. Our room was very clean, the beds were very comfortable (with decent pillows, which is a rarity), and water pressure in the shower was top notch. I would definitely stay at this location again, and it gets my highest recommendation.
