Since my arrival to NYC, in November, I have been a patron of Tolani, and would often come in after work with colleagues and have a glass or two. As a server and junior sommelier, I was pleased to have stumbled upon a late night wine bar, with wine that I actually enjoyed drinking. I built a repertoire with a couple of the bar tenders and have always looked forward to a glass in the evening. That being said, I came in last evening and had one of the most uncomfortable dinning experiences in the city. This particular night I brought along my manager to celebrate his birthday with a glass of wine, bringing along a coworker as well. We arrived right as the kitchen was calling last call. I hurried my guests into ordering something as they were hoping to get some food. With still a full house and my accord with the bartender, I thought there would not be a problem. Tolani is only a couple blocks away, and I wanted to introduce my boss with a quick bite and a glass before moving venues. However, the last minute brush in seemed to set the pace and mood for the rest of the evening. After the food order there was a proceeding pervasive unwelcome and uncomfortable air to the rest of the evening. Being a well practiced lush in both my social and professional life, I without hesitation have recommend this wine bar to the sommelier at my restaurant and fellow coworkers. Reflecting on the many times I have referenced Tolani, I was instantly overcome with complete disappointment and dissatisfaction. I am fully aware of the disheartening feeling of a late night dragging on, as you wait for campers to leave. I experience it myself on a daily basis. However, we walked into a full house at around 10:30pm, and left well before the last table. I always tip accordingly, and the people I bring in tip accordingly. I was appalled by the service. It is the manner in which you address customers, especially loyal and returning customers, that reflects a business, and their respect to that relationship. My personal relationship was diminished with the experience last evening, and I shall forgo returning. This establishment has a great food, wine and on all but one occasion amazing service. But it is the last bitter interaction that taints my overall opinion of this wine bar. Tangled Vines a block down has a great wine selection as well.

I have been a regular at Tolani since it opened. One of my favorite neighborhood spots. The management and owners are so personable and friendly. The food is delicious and unique. It has something for everyone. You can't go wrong with any wine on the menu. The owners are well versed and willing to suggest. I promise you won't regret your visit to Tolani!

Tolani is quite the relaxing weekday getaway. While it's not the be all, end all of wine bars, it's certainly the best I've found in the Upper West thanks to a barkeep[1] who never neglects and never rushes, no matter the night. A solid communal dining table and an oak bar dominate Tolani's space, lending it an organic-yet-urbane feel that translates rightly to its dishes: their lamb sliders are a perfectly portioned, tender, slightly-salty highlight, and their pannekoek (Dutch pancake) is an unexpected find, pairing well with good conversation - and a red, of course. Not all the bites are ambrosia, but you're sure to find a wine to satisfy. [1] Ask if Adrian is in - he rocks.

Great brunch place in a great location. The chilaquiles were delicious! They also have bottomless mimosas. I definitely need to go back.

Great spot worth visiting even if you don't live in the neighborhood. Incredible South African wine selection and really cool atmosphere. There is outdoor seating, a nice bar feel on the 1st floor and a basement for dinner which has a great ambiance. Nice menu with small and medium plates. There are a few South African Staples and the rest is a mix of really nice western and Thai fashion dishes. All of the food is excellent, but try the veggie meatballs and spaghetti squash. The staff is friendly and courteous and very knowledgable on the wine and food menu, helped us pair cheeses and wines perfectly. I will be back soon, and am sure this will be at the top of my list of favorite spots.

I am a native New Yorker and will keep to the directness of how we are known to be :) Food: Excellent! Have the Short iIb Braised Collard Greens and the Moroccan spices Lamb Couscous :) Drinks: Excellent. Great South African wine selection. Space: This is a very elegant, rustic and modern wine bar/restaurant. The bar is intimate and open making it great for mixing and mingling. Great place to bring a date, impress your significant other or get-togethers. Scene: Romantic. Date night. Pickup scene. Singles scene. Girls night out. Crowd: 30-50s Pick-up scene. Mostly professionals and locals. Service: Excellent! The staff is very courteous, knowledgeable & professional.

OK ambience but terrible staff and incredibly rude manager! Not worth it!!! There are too many other places offering good service and quality food on the Upper West Side,
