First the good: There is ALWAYS seating (for those coming here to work in peace) and they have quite a selection of different food. Root beer float was good, but it's hard to mess up on root beer and ice cream. Now for the bad: The food/coffee is overpriced for what they are. It's a bit too dark in there. I sort of get a "cheap feeling" when I'm there. The menu is overpriced and you get taxed on the food, the bathrooms are locked, and the cloth chairs and carpet are pretty nasty looking. They should invest in cleaning them, but I guess they don't because the dim nature of the cafe makes it hard to see how dirty it is unless you look closely. Wifi is quite slow whenever I'm there as well.

This is one of my favorite spots for a great cup of coffee in this beautiful city! What a great neighborhood cafe, I'm so lucky!

Previous reviews seem to have hit the mark, but their ratings seem a bit high given their comments. This place is a nice place to work and hang out, but the coffee is not nearly as good as I can make in a cheap drip coffee maker - and they just don't seem to know how to make espresso drinks. I don't quite understand the criticism of service - like most coffee shops, it's basically self service!? Despite the bad coffee, I stop by regularly when I have some work to do and don't want to get cabin fever. I prefer the atmosphere to Starbucks or Peet's - where the coffee is much better.

Don't come here for the coffee, but it is a good, big space with free (2 hour) wifi and plenty of outlets for laptops ($5 min purchase to use). A worthwhile place to hang out if you happen to be in the area and need to do some work. And two Shanghai dumpling places nearby (one next door, the other further up the street).

Long before Starbucks, Peets and other more recent coffee cafe busineses appeared, there was the Zephyr. It has been a great place to hang out, read, people watch (or listen), study or meet since I moved to SF more than 30 years ago. I love the unpretentiousness of the place. It is comfortable and I can focus and get a lot of work done. Coffee and food are fine. I only wish they had a more extensive food menu--at least multiple soup choices.
