Nothing like a strong southwest wind and a falling tide to shake things up on the boat! We caught mackerel though!

New blog post Change of Season - It happened last week while I was not even thinking about it my season changed and things will be different from now to the second week in August. The weather you ask? Where the fish are? The loon chicks hatched? http://ow.ly/2JfAdz

New blog post What a stretch of weather! - Summer arrived with little fanfare but delivered a nice stretch of weather for us to enjoy. I count seven days with perfect temperatures low humidity and almost cloud free skies. http://ow.ly/2ILem2

New blog post Fly Fishing - Trips come in bunches that is for sure and lately I have been on a teaching fly fishing kick. Several learn to fly fish trips last week and an afternoon of teaching fly casting at Sweetgrass Winery to round out the week. http://ow.ly/2IjFFz

New blog post Eaglets out of the nest! - It is easy to mark the progression of the season by the things that happen outdoors and today was one of those annual milestones. I was on a striper fishing trip and in the course of the morning passed three eagle nests. Fishing near the first nest I could see two heads over the side for a few minutes. As we passed the second both chicks were out of the nest perched on a nearby limb. http://ow.ly/2HRcOD

New blog post Bass are on the beds - Now is the time for some of the most interesting bass fishing of the year. I was on one of my favorite ponds yesterday and the bass were very close to actively defending those depressions in the bottom. I saw many although only a few had fish on them. I am guessing that the next couple of warm sunny days will make all of the difference here in the mid coast. http://ow.ly/2Hgol7

New blog post I like to be reminded - Today I was fishing with a couple from Texas, they vacation here every summer but up until now have stayed on the coast. Yes they had driven inland some but not really spent any time outdoors like they did today. http://ow.ly/2JNdSe

New blog post Great way to spend a rainy morning - The forecast was less than promising for this morning the later it got the more likely rain was. This morning’s clients were not deterred, although they were delighted to hear that I had rain gear on board. http://ow.ly/2IVq95

New blog post Brook Trout! - I do trout fishing trips on a very limited basis, mostly because it is a shoulder season fishery in this part of the state. Trout like cold water and are most active here in the spring and late fall. Sometimes though a client is intent on trout fishing like today and I am glad for the opportunity. http://ow.ly/2IxYAc

New blog post Loons up close - The best of spring fishing is underway with sight fishing for nesting bass; great fun with a fly rod. As I move along the shoreline searching for those beds I meet the loons who are right now searching out their nesting sites. I see at least a few every trip out some near familiar nest sites others in places I am surprised to see them. http://ow.ly/2HDXRH

New blog post Lost? - I had the day off and the weather was perfect. A fishing trip was in order; after all I do not always get to have a rod in my hands on such a perfect morning. I fished Quantabacook Lake in Searsmont; I fish there every few years and rarely with clients because it is so far away to make into a half day trip. http://ow.ly/2HmpTi

New blog post Alewives are in! - In a big way this year, clearly all of the conservation efforts have paid off on the Maine coast. I hear that they are in trouble in southern New England but the runs locally are astounding. I suspect that the changes in our river systems really favor their production now. We visited the Damariscotta Mills fish ladder Monday evening with friends and I cannot remember ever seeing more fish in the ladder. The stream was black with fish, in... http://ow.ly/2He1Y6
