Seek thermal imaging sensor in the scanning electron microscope. Pixel is 10 micron square.

This sensor is basically an array of temperature-sensitive resistors.  Each resistor is designed to absorb as much radiant heat as possible, and the heat (long and mid-wave IR) is focused by a silicon or germanium lens onto the array.  Hotter areas of the focused image heat up specific resistors, and their values are read out serially just like a normal image sensor.  The system is called a microbolometer.

I made these bookends by soaking a fibrous palm tree stump in epoxy, then shaping into boards and sanding flat.
