Hey, all! I'm running a SotDL one-shot I call "Death is a Virtue"! The main point of this one-shot is to introduce and teach new players, so if you guys know of any people who are looking into the system, are looking for their first or even second game, or just want to get better at playing a magician, definitely send them this way!

Some people were talking about a Race Lineup like in similar RPGs. This is my attempt, perhaps I'll move on to the other books too. I may go back in and digitally edit the orc to be taller, she's really on the short side here.

Hmm.. my most successful "horror" in a game was with suspense. Also, remember one of the big rules of GMing: If you stat it, they will kill it. Don't ever think otherwise, they can always find a way. In my example of suspense, I never statted out the big guy, he was just a shadow, swimming in a murky pool of nothing under a glass floor enchanted with thousands of ancient arcane locks.

The party only discovered this room after a long time exploring a big, empty cave, with creepy ambiance playing irl, and me hitting some sound board pieces during the right times. After they finally had done enough exploring, I had them chasing the fleeting image of a child through the once-familiar rooms they had just explored. Now, these same rooms were littered with child's drawings of increasingly disturbing images.

By the time the big reveal came, one of my players actually had to leave the table because he was too scared and was visibly shaking (made an excuse about going to the bathroom).

TL;DR
Suspense, irl music/sounds, and don't stat your scary dudes.
Where do you guys go for inspiration on how to create horror within a campaign or ever over the course of a single game session? I've started watching the walking dead reruns for inspiration for ideas on how to create a persistent feeling of creeping dread, but more examples could only help.

The Shadow of the Demon Lord core rules contains some great advice, but hearing some thoughts from other people running campaigns. What have you tried that works, and what have you tried that fell flat?
