Three years ago, I interviewed Lane DeGregory and Melissa Lyttle about an incredible story they worked on -- the rescue and rehabilitation of a girl who had been crippled by neglect. The story is called "Girl in the window," and you should read it if you haven't. (It's linked in my story.) This kind of deep documentary is increasingly rare in journalism.

They did a followup on the girl last weekend, and I talked to them again. It was another illuminating, deep discussion about what it's like to rebuild a relationship with sources and follow up on a big story. Take a look and tell me what you think. And check out Melissa's photos of then and now -- amazing what has changed and what hasn't.

Two kinds of critters generally invade the home of us Floridians: cockroaches and lizards. One, you crush. The other, you rescue. About to rescue one.

I remember those roaches -- big as hubcaps, fast as muscle cars.

I've avoided diving into G+ because it seems complicated and I've been too busy to think about creating another digital identity. 15 mins in, it's easy and some things make a lot of sense.

I am convinced that +Tom Anderson is the real deal... but if I were writing a comedic short story about Google Plus, it would involve a fake "Tom from Myspace" who snags 10,000 follows, and the real +Tom Anderson trying to prove his identity.

You should read this Times column from a few weeks ago. It describes how lobbying by the city of New Orleans got the Census to revise its population estimates post-Katrina, but when everyone was counted in 2010, the number ended up lower than the previous estimates.

So what? Well, if the population had been counted correctly, then it would have been clear that the city had the worst murder ever recorded for a U.S. city in history.
