Nine feet of snow and ice? That was so last week. Peek a boo.

OK, the feed-me look. The furry-tailed rats are around sharing bird seed with the cardinals, sparrows, wrens and tits. Normally, I chase them away. After all, they destroy the crops. However, it's damned cold in Boston and we've had about 8-feet of snow and ice. Give 'em a break. Plus the birds and squirrels share the seeds peaceably.

Blizzard? Sure, in January. By cracky, I was in one on May 9th 1977.

I was editor of a grocery magazine, Convenience Store Merchandiser, up to Boston from my home and office in NYC with my new wife. She was eager to see the city.  I also had an appointment to interview the prez of the Li'l Peach chain 45 minutes north of town.

Overnight, snow buried buildings and the highway, phones were out (pre-cell phone), as was power. I was a Boy Scout and raised as a good little boy. So, I headed north on a single lane of a four-lane highway in the ice and snow in case Louis Hannaford was in Billerica anyway..

Hours later, I pulled into the L'il Peach parking lot and saw a single car. Sure enough, Lou was there, inside, wearing an Arctic-worthy parka (he was from Maine as were the other Hannafords) in his unheated building.

We went to the gigantic dinner in the middle of town. It had its own generator, as power often failed there. I got the interview and pix. I found that he had also been a Scout and it never entered his mind to blow off the meeting just because of a May blizzard.

In Boston, even bank parking-lot locks are reappearing from under the snowbanks.

Crippled atavism...dead Verizon payphone at Boston's Fairmount commuter-rail stop. Surely the rider frustration played a role.

Waiting for the next big snow storm in Boston, we see the almost full Snow Moon. How apt is that?

When our washer was sick, we headed down the hill. What a nice, efficient, helpful owner. Plus, the large machines handled huge amounts, got them clean and fresh, and quickly (30 minutes for the 50 pounders). Now, I would love to have that kind of washing power at home. I recommend this place.
