Contemplating the Manfrotto 190CXPRO3 carbon-fiber tripod with the 496RC2 ballhead. I'm a landscape photographer, so I'm looking for something lightweight, I don't take panoramas so I won't need the pan function of the 498RC2, I'm 5'7" with no huge zoom lenses, so I won't need the 055, and I have three kids and a mortgage so I can't afford anything better. :D
Has anyone out there in Google+Land used either of these? What did you like? What did you not? Are my assumptions about not needed the pan head correct? I would appreciate any and all comments and advice. Thank you.
Interesting pictures of the recent Sandy Hot Air Balloon Festival coming up soon. ^_^

Went up to Alpine, Utah last night to take a few photos of the fire raging there. Luckily, no injuries and only minor property damage so far... but the sight was truly awe-inspiring

December 17, 2010. The Provo Tabernacle caught fire and burned, most likely caused by a lamp that was left on next to a wooden speaker enclosure. However, this phoenix will rise from the ashes, as the LDS Church plans on rebuilding it as a Provo's second temple.

I managed to get some pictures of the recent eclipse in it's totality. There was only a window of a few minutes before the red moon went down behind the mountains. However, there's a lot of haze and noise that I'm trying to compensate for. So, in anticipation of the eventuality I get a decent photo out of it, here's a picture of the early phase of the eclipse.

Thanks, +Scott Jarvie, for a subject that has featured a lot of great photographs! #photofave

This is a reshare for me, but this photo is my personal favorite that I have taken. Partially because it was in my ancestral homeland, Japan, and partially because I just love fireworks. Partially, too, because of the dramatic color and dynamic lines. But, mostly it's because it was taken using the Canon AE-1 film camera that my father gave me right before I left for Japan. In fact, this photo (slightly trimmed) is currently in process at Nichols Photo Lab in Salt Lake City to become a print that I will give to my father on his 80th birthday, as a tribute for all that he's done for me and taught me. Hopefully, it will look good as a metallic paper print.

Thanks, Scott! ^_^

Welcome to the many good people who have added me over the last few days. I do hope my photos do not disappoint!

This is one of my all-time favorite photos. It was taken quite a while ago, during the summer of 1993 with the venerable and beloved Canon AE-1 given to me by my father, along with its 50mm f1.8 prime lens. I packed that camera all over central Japan for two years. It was heavy, manual focus, manual winding, manual ISO, and absolutely bulletproof. ^_^ I think this explains why I don't often rapid-fire photos with my current Canon 50D. My fps with that beast was about 0.5! :D

Unfortunately, the details as to f-stop (probably 1.8), shutter speed (probably very long) is lost. I believe it was taken on Kodak Ektar 100 film, but I don't have the negative with me at the moment to verify. I recently had the negative rescanned at high resolution by the good folks at Nichols Photo here in Salt Lake City, Utah. I highly recommend them for their excellent service and professional results!

Been pretty busy lately, so I haven't been able to post photos in quite a while. So, I submit... a puppy. ^_^ This vicious animal was spotted at a local farmer's market. In fact, it was so dangerous it fell asleep literally seconds after this image was taken. :D

Spent a few days last week at Clayshire Castle, a new bed and breakfast in rural Indiana. Took several photos while I was there, several of which were used to make this image. ^_^ Beautiful place. Did I mention it's owned by my father-in-law?

So, here's my composite take on the eclipse of December 10th. I would love some critique on how to make this or future composites better. In the meantime, please do enjoy. Also, it was cold. Very cold. I need better boots. :D

+Mike Rector - I wanted something a little simpler than those kinds of images too. Also, I wanted detail on the moon, since I rented that 70-200mm lens just for this purpose. ^_^

Behind the Lens - Photo Critique

So this autumn, I got my Halloween pumpkins from this great guy in Orem. Bud Durrant by name. He was not only fun to talk with, but he was gracious enough to have a weird Japanese man stalk all over his yard taking pictures of his stock. This is where I got most of my "Dragons of Autumn" images from.

Well, I'd like to say thank you to him. You know, a little bit more than just simply buying pumpkins for him. So why not show him? I'll probably be going over to Nichols Photo in Salt Lake City in the next couple of weeks to print this out. It will be going into an 8X20 frame. My first attempt at a triptych. If anyone has any advice or suggestions, I would be more than happy to hear them!
