I've just gotten word from Asa Dotzler (Director of Firefox) that Mozilla will be ceasing development of desktop Firefox and will be pouring all resources into Firefox OS. Desktop Firefox will take on the same type of update schedule that Thunderbird has meaning, just important security updates and major bug fixes and it will be up to the community to continue on with developing features, etc. Exactly what this means for Australis is unknown but there has already been a great amount of progress so the community shouldn't have trouble finishing things up.

Mobile Internet usage is expected to reach 20% as early as May or shortly thereafter and Mozilla feels that since they're so far behind in the mobile market, it only makes sense to go full throttle and try and catch up with Firefox OS.

One way Mozilla plans on doing this is by bringing Firefox OS to U.S. markets sooner than what was originally planned (2014). There's talk of deals with new carriers and manufactures which will help to expedite the process.

Now for me, as a long time user and supporter, I get this, I understand it, but it's a mistake. Desktops aren't going away any time soon. In fact, they probably won't in my lifetime. I understand that Mozilla never set out to dominate web browser usage with Firefox, it was, in a sense, to make a point, to shake things up, bring on change, so cool, they did that, but to be honest, I feel abandoned. Much like when Microsoft left IE6 for dead.

I'll do my best to contribute in some way to the Firefox OS movement because it is very, very important, but I feel a bit sad. Like I'm losing a best friend. Chrome will completely dominate, even over IE. It is what is.

Mitchell Baker will be posting an announcement soon through the official Mozilla channels.
