When we first met our deaf dog Edison, my husband and I were most definitely not looking for another dog- and a ten-week old, deaf pit bull puppy was even further down on our “to-do” list.

Way down. Somewhere between a root canal and inviting my mother to come for a visit.

Here is the story of what led us to adopting a deaf dog- and how we learned to live with and train him.

Chester Bennington is dead and I want to scream. I want to scream for the loss of a great artist and musician.

I want to scream because, in Chester’s brave public discussion of the sexual abuse he experienced, I found a kindred spirit, a brother-in-arms, a friend now gone.

Knowing that Chester Bennington and I shared similar childhood experiences, viscerally understanding his demons, knowing that he is no longer with us and knowing exactly how he died, “One More Light” is like a kick in the balls. Every time.

The problem is I don’t just sympathize with Chester and his struggles, I empathize. Empathy is the curse of those in the know.

Flashback. Nashville. June, 2015.

I arrived in Nashville- kicking and screaming.

I was dragging two suitcases and a leather satchel through the airport terminal, muttering to anyone who would listen, “Why am I here?”

I’d flown to Nashville to attend my very first BlogPaws Conference, an annual gathering of pet-loving bloggers and social media influencers, but I didn’t know why.

At best, I was a beginner blogger who sporadically shared stories and photos as a hobby. I had no goals or strategies and I had no intention of turning my blog into a business. It was just something I did to entertain myself at night- so why did I have to be here?

Have you ever wondered why I call my husband Ricky Ricardo? There is a very good reason for that and today I’m doing some splainin’.

As a young gay boy, the very first man I had a crush on was Ricky Ricardo from the television show, I Love Lucy. Sure, I loved Lucy’s physical comedy, Lucy and Ethel’s antics and the ridiculous yet hilarious situations they got themselves into, but it was Ricky that I loved the most. It was his scenes I waited for, crouching ever closer to the TV when he appeared on screen.

For me, it was the I Love Ricky show. READ ON -->
