Dragons: Instead of rolling hit dice like other monsters, there is a mini-system where you choose/roll age, assign hit points and calculate CL. Does this complication improve the game? Or is it a complication without a purpose? Wouldn't it be better for S&W to do dragons the same as other monsters?

which is obviously way more involved than you want in your base rules. I think it's what age is meant to encourage/imply, but I don't feel like that's ever actually elaborated on in the originals or retroclones (but maybe I've missed it).
Like, ordering creatures by age rather than HD is cool, but only if the age actually means something. In Whitebox (and in a lot of other places), age and HD are more or less synonymous.
Plus, like a d8 for age means the descriptors get a little weirdly granular (old v very old v aged?).Jul 8, 2013
- The names for age categories are already quite in Monsters & Treasures: very young, young, sub-adult, adult, old, very old. I would use these for categories 2-7, hatchling for 1 and ancient for 8. But I never used age categories to describe dragons.Jul 8, 2013
Yeah, I don't care for some of those age categories in vol 2 (sub-adult? old v very old?). I think S&W did a good job of making them a bit more palatable, but they still kind of suffer from the necessity of coming up with 8 sufficiently generic descriptors of age.

- Age category is just a mechanic for me that stays in the background and helps me get the values for the beast. I never say "a very old red dragon attacks you" because the age of the dragon is like the Hit Point or Armour Class value of the beast - how the heck would the player character know it by sight? On the other hand they can see how big, scarred, ugly it is.Jul 8, 2013
- Yeah, I think that's what the original objection was - if it's not mechanically significant and if it doesn't have any diegetic meaning, then it's really just background noise.
But I don't think the point was that they'd know it's age by sight, but that each incremental increase was tied to an age and each age had its own ecological, setting-significant facts.Jul 8, 2013
