Don't miss the next episode of +American Astronomical Society Afternoon Astronomy Coffee Hangout tomorrow at 3pm ET. Our scientists Mansi Kasliwal and Ariel Goobar, along with +UC Berkeley Peter Nugent will talk about the potential of lensed Type Ia supernovae, like the recently discovered multiple-image iPTF16geu to serve as tools to measure the expansion rate of the universe. Tune in on the Youtube channel and join the conversation with a hashtag #AstroCoffee

This is a clear message we wholeheartedly stand behind!
#climatechange #scienceisreal
"Our politicians may deny it. Our corporations may deny it. And even the secretary of state and the president may deny it. But denying it doesn't change reality. The Earth is warming; we are the cause; the consequences are severe and increasing; it's up to all of us to do something about it. Even with La Niña in place for 2017, global temperature levels are likely to never sink back to the 20th century average, not for a single year in the 21st century. The Earth belongs to us all, including all the humans who'll come after us. If we have any hope of taking care of it, it has to start with accepting the truth. Even if it's inconvenient."

The latest climate science results are out, and 2016 was the hottest year on record. Again. Breaking the previous record... from 2015. Which broke the previous record of 2014. In fact, of the 17 hottest years on record, 16 of them have occurred in the 21st century. The question isn't whether the Earth is warming (it is), whether it's human-caused (it is), whether burning fossil fuels is the major contributor (it is), or whether we need to do something about it (we do). The question is whether we will. And that begins with accepting the scientific truth.

It's easy to dupe you if you want to be duped, but the science doesn't lie. Come learn it, and what the arguments you're likely to encounter are. Arm yourselves. We're in for a hell of a fight.

Can the universe hide things from us? Certainly! But we have made an extraordinary progress in "seeing" the cosmos way beyond the small span of frequencies that our eye can detect. Learn about how we've done it and what we've uncovered this Friday (7:15pm) at the Ventura County Astronomical Society public talk by Growth graduate student Anna Ho. If there was something like a "marital status" in the Universe, more than half the stars would have to tick the box indicating some kind of domestic partnership! Astronomers call them binary systems. Understanding the evolution of binaries plays a big role in understanding the evolution of the Universe. Growth lead an international team of astronomers to piece together one of the longest and most complete records of rare explosion originating in a binary system. Their finding can provide important observational clues about stars' companionship.

A fantastic study by our Caltech colleagues revealing the influence of supernovae on galaxy evolution like out Milky Way. Such galaxies were predicted to have thousands of small dwarf galaxies around them observational astronomer could not find them! It turns out that powerful supernovae winds created by the stellar explosion can rip away much of the star-forming gas in this dwarf galaxies.

The Growth principal investigator, Dr. Mansi Kasliwal explores the birth, life and death of stars and in the process has become "a rising star" herself.
Read a feature story on Dr. Kasliwal in OZY in their Rising Star section.

An international team of astronomers, led by Growth's astronomer Ragnhild Lunnan at California Institute of Technology have discovered an extremely powerful #supernova that doesn’t quite fit any of the proposed models that explain such spectacular cosmic blasts.

For many of us, the sunset is a symbol of another day ending. For astronomers it represents the beginning of another night full of wonders of cosmic proportions. Our student Atharva Patil has just returned to +IUCAA ‪#‎India‬ after his internship at National Central University in Taiwan. Some may see it as the end of an adventure, but for Atharva and all of us in Growth it's the beginning of a long and exciting journey of learning, exploration and scientific discoveries about the vast ‪#‎Universe‬.

We are training the next generation of astronomers and we're most happy when they start making their first small discoveries. Kit Chinetti from #Caltech has just made hers. Read how she caught an exploding star in action http://growth.caltech.edu/news-kit-first-discovery.html
