Care and Recovery after Otoplasty Surgery... Immediately after otoplasty surgery Dr. Jacob wraps a large protective dressing around the head and ears. He removes this dressing in 24 hours. The sutures are to be cleansed twice a day with hydrogen peroxide followed by an application of either Neosporin or Bacitracin. The sutures are removed one week after the procedure.

After the initial 24 hour period when the large protective dressing placed by Dr. Jacob is removed, the patient must wear a head band that will protect the ears from the head changing positions. This is crucial. Children must wear this headband both day and night for 2 weeks, followed by 4 weeks at nighttime only. Adults should wear it for twenty four hours for the first 2 days and then at night only for the following 4 ½ weeks. The best choice of head band is a wide skiing headband that can be purchased at a sporting goods store. Elevating the head and applying ice for the first 2 - 3 days after surgery will help with swelling and bruising.

On the day of the procedure, the patient should dress comfortably in a shirt that buttons down the front. Although we will not be using general anesthesia, we advise that only a light breakfast be eaten on the day of the procedure.
