The submission deadline for the doctoral consortium is approaching... March, 5

The doctoral consortium is a forum for PhD students to present their work, to receive feedback and guidance, to help them in completing their Phd research. It is a closed event where only PhD students can participate. Interested students should submit an extended research abstract describing:

their research topic
the work so far
the methods used
the planned next steps

Abstracts will be reviewed and selected on the basis of quality and regarding the benefit students may derive from participating on the DC. Preference will be given to:

students who have already worked at least 9 months on their PhD
and who have more than 9 months of work left to do.

Candidates should provide a 4 page abstract of their thesis which should be formatted according to the ACM guidelines.
This may be essentially the same content as a paper submission, with the addition of some information on: overall research question for the PhD, research approach, earlier studies done and future studies planned.

Your complete paper must be submitted as a PDF (only) no later than March 5 2012, 5:00 PM (1700) GMT at the EasyChair Submission web site. Candidates should also have a brief (one-page) recommendation letter from their main thesis advisor sent to the Doctoral Consortium chair , supporting the candidate's application.

Candidates shall be selected on the basis of interest, relevance to IDC and quality of the research presented and especially regarding the benefit that the DC can provide to them.

The format of the DC will consist of presentations and feedback from a panel of experts from the IDC community. Panels will also discuss examples of model PhD thesis and discuss practical advice. Participants to the DC will also be invited to present their research as a poster to the conference participants.

Workshop on Digital Fabrication for Educational Contexts
The workshop takes place on Tuesday, June 12th, 2012.
It is a satellite event of the 11th International Conference on Interaction Design and Children - IDC 2012.

In this workshop we want to discuss the concept of digital fabrication and demonstrate how this novel and diverse approach can be applied for educational contexts. Participants will discover and discuss the possibilities and impact of different digital fabrication technologies.

This workshop is intended for practitioners of digital fabrication as well as newbies.

Position papers or demos (2-4 pages following the ACM submission format) should address the design, use, or evaluation of digital fabrication technologies for educational contexts. Papers must be related to digital fabrication and should cover one or more of the following topics:
tools and technologies (3D printing, laser cutting, etc.)
educational concepts
experience design
open innovation
best practices
dissemination and establishment
local and social practices

A Workshop on "Interactive Technologies for Children with Special Needs" is organized by Meryl Alper, Shuli Gilutz, and Juan Pablo Hourcade
Position papers should address the design, use, and evaluation of interactive technologies for children with special needs.

Possible topics include:
Design methods
Applying theories to design and evaluation
Best practices Evaluation and impact assessment
Designing for the abilities of children with multiple impairments
Individualizing approaches and other methods to address individual differences
Addressing maturation
Engaging typically developing peers
Complying with regulations and guidelines

Welcome to the 11th International Conference on Interaction Design and Children!
In 2012, as in prior conferences, the main goals will be "to understand children's needs and how to design for them, by presenting and discussing the most innovative research in the field of interaction design for children, by exhibiting the most recent developments in design and design methodologies, and by gathering the leading minds in the field of interaction design for children". As special themes, IDC 2012 would like to discuss children's needs under the perspectives of "pedagogical aspects in theory and practise" as well as "children from diverse cultural backgrounds".
