Straight from the horse's mouth: Matt Cutt's (head of webspam at Google) explains how small niche sites can outrank large, established brands with consistent effort and high quality content. Thanks to +Nathaniell Brenes for sharing!
How can a small site ever outrank a big one? Agility and NICHE expertise. Matt Cutts talks about starting in a tiny niche and growing out from it. It's absoultely possible to provide better information than the big boys, because you know more.

I've complained more than once about Buzz Feed, Mashable, Huffington Post and these types of sites that outsource their content to journalists just looking for click and filling their quota of words.

When you know about your niche/topic, it's clear to someone else on your level. I've seen it happen in homebrewing and in China related stuff. I imagine it's happening in every industry.
