Belgian Dubbel with sweet orange peel (at 5 min) and a Tahitian vanilla bean (at flame out) and cinnamon stick in the primary. Looking forward to this one. (from the AHA recipe website - "Dubbel your pleasure - Hombrew Chef Sean Paxton")

Tasting reveals a winning brew! Good carbonation, nice malty sweet taste with just enough bitterness to balance. Good brown color, nice initial head but didn't last long. Only 2 weeks in the bottle. Hooray!

+zach nope the IPA turned out to be quite good. Maltier than the Lagunitas we were shooting for, but quite nice. It cloudier than i expected out of the fermenter. Not sure if it was all yeast cake (more than usual and using this new fermenter) or if it was due to the whole hops we used to dry hop. (We went off recipe a bit.)  It took a few weeks for the aroma to settle in, but after about 4 weeks in the bottle this is a nice IPA.

Brewing day! Trying out an experiment - brewing an original bock based on centuries old stories of the einbeck regional beer from the 14th century (1/3 wheat malt, ale yeast). Also, counter-flow wort chiller FTW! (Holy crap, it is awesome!)

Here's a question for the brewing community:
what is the leading cause of missing a target OG? I've been all-grain brewing for about a year and the bigger the grain bill, the larger the gap between my target OG and the actual OG. I'm brewing 6 gallon batches at this time.

10 gallon insulated cooler for my mash tun, 9 gallon brew kettle.
Last brew was a belgian strong blonde, target OG was 1.065, my OG was 1.057. 60 minute mash @152F, batch sparge with 168F (1 gallon, 5 min rest then 4 gallons, 5 min rest).
I changed brew supply shops recently and that's when i noticed the bigger difference (it could be the grain mill at the new place). I had been fairly close in past brewing sessions (+/- .002).

No what the recipe calls for, it just avoids being hot for so long.

Thanks. I didn't specify in the original post but this recipe is featured in “Brewing with Fruit: Wheat Beer & Beyond” by Dave Mentus in the May/June 2010 issue of Zymurgy. I got it off the AHBA recipe webpage.

Brew day! Belgian strong blonde. First minor disaster of home brewing. Starter didn't really "take off". Didn't notice at the supply store but the yeast packet was from August. So, stuff is in the carboy but I'll have to wait to pitch until tomorrow when I can go get fresher yeast...
