Zodiacal Light & The Milky Way from both Earth Hemispheres
Petr: "This composite image shows views of the January sky from both of Earth's hemispheres. It ingeniously uses the composition and timing to demonstrate different views of the Milky Way and the zodiacal light close to the Sun in the sky, which is located in both cases under the horizon. The upper image was taken from Slovakia on January 2, 2016 after sunset and the bottom image was captured just before dusk in the early Chilean morning of January 26, 2015. Along with the columns of the zodiacal light, you can notice reddish or pink H II region emission nebulae in the visible plane of our Galaxy."

"On the northern hemisphere, the most noticeable nebula is NGC 7000 or The North America Nebula (close to the upper right corner), while in the south—in a completely opposite position—you can find a rose-shaped Carina Nebula. Both images were captured using the same equipment in almost the same season, just with a year difference between the first image and the second one. Unfortunately, the northern hemisphere (from the Slovakian village of Oravska Lesna) is disturbed by significant light pollution unlike the southern one, captured from ESO’s Paranal Observatory, which is located in an incredibly natural dark spot of the Atacama Desert."

Technical details: Used Canon 6D IR Baader modified, Samyang 24 mm, f2.0, ISO 8000. Image from Slovakia (upper) is 23×15 seconds panorama, image from Chile (bottom) is 24×15 seconds panorama. Both images were taken using a tripod.

An Airglow Fan from Lake to Sky
Why would the sky look like a giant fan? Airglow. The featured intermittent green glow appeared to rise from a lake through the arch of our Milky Way Galaxy, as captured last summer next to Bryce Canyon in Utah, USA. The unusual pattern was created by atmospheric gravity waves, ripples of alternating air pressure that can grow with height as the air thins, in this case about 90 kilometers up. Unlike auroras powered by collisions with energetic charged particles and seen at high latitudes, airglow is due to chemiluminescence, the production of light in a chemical reaction. More typically seen near the horizon, airglow keeps the night sky from ever being completely dark.
