"I want to posit that there's another reason why so many women have chosen alternative paths, and it's not because it's difficult: it's because that in terms of what generates sustained long term happiness in our lives, careers are a long way from the be all and end all, and women have simply done a better job of recognizing it."

YES - feminism isnt about conforming to the male model of ANYTHING. Sex, love, relationships, work, childbearing, home life, hobbies, etc.

The more men who choose to juggle and make that known, the more the pressure on the workplace to shift to modern lives as they actually function, and not some idea in which men with children must sign their working lives away in exchange for that extra bit of money, particularly when many of them no longer want to.

As a social worker and a psychologist/social science researcher by profession, I am excited to finally have a model for evaluating the work I do.  Would love to see if I can get some pieces of this in practice.

State and local advocacy for early care and education opportunities for vulnerable (e.g. black & brown, low-income) children and families.  Very specifically, I'm looking at increasing access to high-quality early learning opportunities for young children in the child welfare system.  I'm new to advocacy, but am astonished as the lack of metrics - we use them to build our case for what we're advocating for, but less so in terms of measuring effectiveness of our campaigns/lobbying activities!

"A couple of weeks ago there was a Senate Committee hearing on the state of America’s mental health system that was convened in response to the Newtown tragedy. Out of all the witnesses giving testimony not a single one of them was a social worker; despite social workers being the number one providers of mental health services in the United States. Why didn’t the National Association of Social Workers, who have lobbyist working on Capitol Hill, ensure that the profession had a representative on this panel? Where are the social workers?

Kudos for not backing down on the #guncontrol  conversation, but not one mention in here re: our appallingly inadequate #mentalhealth (non) system of care. Why do we continue to let people devolve into such poor functioning as for these things to happen?

As someone in the public policy field with some basic clinical mental health training, I also find it hard to come up with policy solutions for outlier events. These tragedies are hard, terrifying, and seemingly out of the blue. We may never be able to completely prevent seemingly random acts of terrible violence. However, tragedies around gun violence, tragedies around mental health, tragedies around the commingling of both, happen on a daily basis in families and communities throughout our nation (and typically manifest in suicide or accidental homicide) that we refuse to address in a comprehensive way. Policy is only helpful in its ability to affect behaviors and outcomes on the aggregate, and in doing so, we may begin to limit the outliers (and the magnitude) of outlier events.
