Steve, some surprising and important stats here, particularly the % of businesses and total workforce that SMEs represent. Something else that is worthy of research is how knowledge sharing changes as the size of organisations increase. The hypothesis might be that small cohesive groups (up to 150 people) don't require special knowledge management support, particularly when they have formed during a startup. However, what happens when they grow and become more dispersed? What were natural knowledge sharing behaviours, physical and environmental factors may no longer serve them well.

This was recognised by innovation leaders W.L.Gore (Goretex etc). Gore split up groups or departments, in effect creating internal SMEs, once they get to about 200 people. "Gore’s commitment to keeping its operations small and informal is one key. It generally doesn’t allow a facility to grow to more than 200 people". This article explains the concept and results. http://www.managementexchange.com/story/innovation-democracy-wl-gores-original-management-model
