This day in history!

May 30th 1650

The French ambush the Island Caribs at a secret meeting place. A slaughter ensues and a number of Island Caribs plunge over a cliff to their deaths; the hill is later known as Le Morne des Sauteurs: “Leapers’ Hill.” None of the French are killed.

Fun Fact:

York House was originally a domestic residence owned by Jean de Ponthieu, it was purchased from the Scott family by 1816 and in 1817 the legislature passed an act to authorize the court of justice.

Presumably the name York House was derived from Frederick Augustus, the Duke of York and the second son of King George III who referred to his house as York House, (Martin, 2007).

Did you Know?

That Deponthieu Street, just off of Market Hill in St. George’s, was once known as ‘Cockroach Alley.’ Reportedly, this short street, “early in the 20th century, was notorious as a red-light district. Cockroach being a euphemism for a prostitute” (Brizan and jessamy, 2004).

The name Deponthieu is after John Deponthieu who was a prominent proprietor on the island during slavery. He owned much of the area that surrounds York House.
